Package this pick with something else to get a true young top pairing d-man that can be the stud the Oilers need for the next 7/8 years. This could help Edmonton quicken their ability to become cup contenders. With Bouchard a couple of years away from being a real good top 3 d-man he could benefit from having a proper role model to learn from. |

This is some pretty low resolution thinking. You speak as though those types of Dmen are regularly made available via trade- let alone for an 8th overall pick. The last time an 8th overall pick was traded, it took an additional quality prospect (Dumoulin) and roster player (Sutter) just to get Jordan Staal; imagine what the add would have to be for a young, top pairing Dman.
Last time we were rumored to be in on a top pairing Dman via trade was Subban and he was rumored to cost Draisaitl, Nurse and the #4 pick in 2016. Ignoring our obvious cap constraints, which player do you suggest we acquire? What makes you believe he's available? Why would said player come to Edmonton (assuming he has a choice)?
If it was so easy to acquire a young top pairing Dman, the Oilers would've done it years ago. |

Why would he sign here if he doesn't want to sign in Winnipeg? Also, the cap space. |

I mean no one knows all his reasons for sure but being behind Buff and Myers on the depth chart might have something to do with it. |

Would love Pulju to stay and be a dominating force for us on the wing but the way his career has started here I just think for the players sake a fresh start is needed |

I don’t and looking at Holland’s history with European players I’m now just wanting to see how he handles it

Except that he miles better than Myers and comparable to Byfuglien and played just under 23 minutes/game. Given that he had 18 PP points, it also seems unlikely that he's lacking in PP time. Seems clear to me that his role is no longer an issue; has to be something else. |

Vegas is in a bit of a cap crunch... I wonder if we could sneak in and land Eakin and Miller.
LV - Puljujarvi & Benning
EDM - Eakin & Miller
It would solve some issues on our blue line and would allow us to not rush any of the kids.
Klefbom / Larsson
Nurse / Miller
Sekera / Russell
It would also add a solid 3rd line center in Eakin.

I still think one of Sekera or Russell will need to be moved for cap space. I would prefer to move Sekera mostly because I dont trust either him or klefbom to stay healthy for a full season. |

Russell isn't exactly the picture of health himself. Most of our Dmen have a history of injuries 😅 I'd rather keep the ones I can trust to produce positive results. |

My issue here is we add ~4-5mil in cap without fixing our glaring top-6 wing problem. Miller is good in a sheltered role, but not one I'm sure I'd trust for top-4 beside Nurse. |

I feel like Russell on a third pairing is more than adequate but when Klefbom and Sekera are both out he takes on too many minutes for him to be as effective. |

I don't know that I like Russell on a 3rd pairing with one of our rookies. I don't foresee that being a stable situation for someone to learn the NHL game beside. |

I dont believe we will be seeing any rookies in our starting 6 next season especially not with Holland at the helm. More likely that they will keep Benning or explore free agency for our 6th defender.

I could see the following:
Klefbom- Larsson
Nurse- ???
Jones/Willy Legs- Sekera
Gravel, Persson
Benning going for Brown and Russell going for cap space. I'd prefer to try keep Benning if we could as he's a good 3rd pairing guy, but we're desperate enough at RW to make me accept it. |

I can see that as being an option but I really dont believe Holland is going to be bringing up any of our young D for at least 2 seasons. This is a GM whose track record is usually leaving guys in the minors for 4 seasons. He himself has also stated that we have a NHL defense and his focus is on wingers and a goalie. |

So trade from a weakness to decrease a possible strength? Should be targeting top 6 wingers so we can spread CMD-Drai-Nuge across 3 lines and not have to compact them to accomplish any scoring. Eakin is a downgrade from Nuge at potential 3C. And Miller is a downgrade from Sek on 2nd pair. Nurse and Sek have shown some chemistry. I prefer to keep them together for one last try before its decided if Seks has to go in order to afford to keep Nurse once his bridge is up.
Not against trading Puj, but it should bring a proven 2nd line winger in the deal selling on the last bit of his potential. Would prefer giving him a season in Bako and then offering him a chance to compete for a spot the following year. Yamo spent majority of the season in Bako, he can compete for a spot to start the season, but if he falters he goes back to finish the year.
Do we still own Landers rights if he chooses to try an NHL career again? I would give him a shot. Brett Connolly can get a sniff if he doesnt ask too much. Brandon Tanev, sure for a 3rd line role, few others I would consider on PTO like Ennis and Vanek. My main targets however... Brandon Pirri and Curtis McEllhinny. I believe McEllhinney could be a 1b and doesnt require BIG money to get the shot if he's told he is on the club for the year not a 2 way, and will be given ample opportunity to prove he can be a 1 if Koskinen slumps again and he can take the reigns. I still dont understand why Pirri hasnt been given a shot as a consistent 2nd line player. Has shown an ability to score (.28gpg) in the NHL while usually being put into a 3rd line role (Drai is a .36 by comparison and considered to be upper echelon after his past 2 seasons). This team needs to address needs needed for this NHL not the NHL of 8 years ago as our past GM tried to address.
Sign Pirri and McEllhinny to smaller 1 way contracts so they feel they have the attention of the team. Keep them to 1 or 2 year contracts and see what they do. Then add a guy or 2 on PTOs. See if we find another Chiasson. |
