the Leaf management made a huge set of mistakes coming out that 2013 "collapse"... blaming essentially all of it on the goalie, and looking for a quick fix by acquiring Nelson Mandella from Los Angeles.

Dubas has to make sure he doesn't make the same poor judgements that the then management team made.

suggesting Dubas has to "drastically remake the roster" makes you sound like Dreger... obsessing over Mitch Marner's upcoming 28 offer sheets.

Just saw what you posted in the last blog about Marleau

did anyone know that? I just assumed it was all paid at once. that looks like a little added protection for PM. he is going to be around all season

Thanks Lou

The guy came to Toronto to win a Championship.

Why would he bail when he has one last chance?

I hope he regrets his decision, now that SJ is deep into the playoffs and requests a trade back to the Sharks.

If only the Sharks didn't have a say in this.

Dubas is going to make moves. Expectations have gone through the roof since the team made such leaps, then added Tavares. Think most forget this is still a work in progress.

That said yeah there is going to be some significant changes. As there should be.

Going to just wait and see how this pkays out and what Dubas does.

Funny how you keep hearing the narrative about Lou being awesome at "getting what he wants at the price he wants".

And then he goes and sign Marleau to a deal that looks pretty god damn good.... for Patrick Marleau.

It completely blindsided me.

I have no idea why this was done - he already has a NMC.

Lou got the guy he wanted, but on Marleau's terms. Lou agreed to add the 3rd year to the deal, something the Sharks didn't want to do.

the only think that comes to mind it it would reduce the amount of teams that would take his contract?

here is a good write up from Mirtle on the situation and another scenario

https://theathletic.com/9...lex-salary-cap-situation/

Marleau also has a no-movement clause, meaning any trade would have to be finessed, including significant involvement from his camp. There would likely have to be an arrangement where the acquiring team would then buy him out, making Marleau free to sign elsewhere as a UFA. (Possibly even back in Toronto but on a fourth-liner’s salary, the way Brooks Orpik did with Washington in the summer of 2018.)

Ref got in the way and stopped the puck and it ended helping the US score the winning goal later in the shift.

It's almost as misused as "fortuitous" - which sportscasters and writers across North America think is the same as "fortunate."

It's not.

And brother, do not even get me started on "literally."

My head figuratively explodes when I see writers misuse it.

Your presence on this forum is fortuitous.

Literally has literally been used wrong so often by white girls that it doesn't always mean literal anymore.

that's probably better than doing it conservatively

But who does that help?

Marleau has a NMC, so it could only hurt him if things went south in Toronto.

And obviously it doesn't help the Leafs, either.

It's not on January 1, so it's not done for tax purposes.

So why the frank?

the Zietsev contract doesnt seem very well constructed for the team.
he doesnt really get paid up front to make it easier to trade.

and why the (frank) is it so long? ....

One that really puzzles me:

Why do people have trouble with the word "bias?"

"The refs are bias against the Leafs."

Holy frank, I see this all the time on the interdweebs.

I'm going to argue and say that this is an example of a time when you *do* wish to be conservative in your handling of the situation.
