To be fair GOT has no more source material to work from and they are just winging it since last season. Most of the quality on HBO all come from solid source material. HBO is wrapping GOT up as a lightning pace to save money.

Pens have gone with a new creative direction.

lol, really not a fan of the penguins in any manner and never have been, but i quite enjoyed this blog entry- very well done.

as for GoT (no spoilers ahead, though not sure anyone would even care anymore at this point; it’s beyond redemption)- i quite enjoyed season 7, it never really felt that rushed to me. after reading the endless chatter, mostly being outrage (and rightly so based on season 8), on the interwebs about the last two seasons being rushed i guess i can agree to a certain degree about S7, but i still thought it held all the emotional weight of previous seasons regardless.

the current/final season started out promising, i thought the first two episodes were a bit rushed but nothing overly done so. quite enjoyed the build-up to the NK/WW battle during episode 2; the calm before the storm, our favorite characters quietly reflecting collectively on the past. it was fine, if not somewhat lacking in certain areas.

but it all started to fall apart with episode 3, been a total sh*tshow of nonsensical clusterf**k since.

while visually gorgeous (perhaps the most of any episode ever), episode 5 was the epitome of lazy, uninspired writing. the big heel-turn that was at its center- sure, it was a long time coming and certainly foreshadowed in both the books and throughout the first 7 seasons of the show. but D&D opting to go with 13 episodes to closeout the countless arcs and plotlines ultimately ruined the series.

GRRM made it clear he thought the series could have easily been 13 seasons, and at no point did HBO say anything suggesting it couldn’t go on for that long. hell, why would they?? it’s the biggest show in the history of TV and thus the biggest cashcow any network - premium or otherwise - has ever had. of course they’d pay for 13 seasons.

but no, D&D got signed on for the next Star Wars trilogy (though there’s another director who’s in play for a SW trilogy as well, and given how awful S8 of GoT has been, i can totally see Disney going with him over D&D for the first, if not dropping D&D all together), so they got the biggest ending points from GRRM and rushed to get there in 13 episodes as opposed to fleshing it out as they properly should’ve been.

honestly, it didn’t even need to be 13 seasons by any means. simply giving S7 and S8 ten episodes each, with several of those hitting the 80-90 min mark, would’ve been enough if D&D had any capacity/ability to actually write, but
with no more source material what we got was this rushed mess that quite frankly has ruined the entire series for me. it’s going to be very difficult to go back and enjoy any of the earlier seasons knowing how awful it ends up in S8 (like i said, i personally liked S7, but in retrospect knowing what we know now, yeah it should’ve been 10 episodes).

in case anyone is as annoyed as me, and you simply don’t care about spoilers anymore (i never knew full plotlines from the show were leaked before, but after seeing E5 and reading someone’s comment about a subreddit with leaks, i said screw it and went there)- check out the subreddit:

r/freefolk

...one of the threads on top of the page has the leaked plot, and literally everything one of the posters leaked as info came out as being 100% accurate and true for the first 5 episodes. thus, there’s no question their info for how it all ends is 100% accurate as well. and let me tell you, if you’ve felt letdown thus far, just wait and see (or read, like i did, cuz it just doesn’t matter anymore, lol) how they “close out” the series.

...let’s just say all of those memes about how at least your favorite show wasn’t “Dexter-ed” are going to soon say at least your favorite show wasn’t Throned because jesus christ, what an unfulfilling and awful way this is going to go down.

guarantee you i’d have done a better job than the jumbled mess we actually have.

and 1800 minutes? GRRM said 13 seasons, i clearly said it could’ve easily worked with 8 seasons @ 10 episodes, with a few being 80-90 mins. so that’s more like 420-500 minutes, tops. plenty of time to flesh out arcs and plots in a more desirable manner than they have been.

and if D&D didn’t want it anymore or thought they were incapable or simply wanted to move onto other projects, it’s not like they would have had ANY trouble passing the torch to someone else. i’m positive there are hundreds of awesome director’s who’d leap at the opportunity.

2 seasons (7 and 8) x 10 episodes/seasons x 90 minutes/episode =1800 minutes

And I didn't know you were a professional writer. Please let me know you film and TV successes, I'd be interested to see your work.

I didnt even mind episode 5 that much. Certainly not worth the millions of tears being shed about it. Cheeses rice, its a TV show. That's all.

Its GoT....I expect pretty much everyone to die and the outcome to be not something I expected or wanted. Yes, its rushed this season and a bit last season as well, but its still bad a$$ in many ways...and that episode was bad a$$ in a lot of ways.

I was entertained....and is that not the point?

Agreed. Yeah, it's not as deep and involved as it was for seasons 1-6, but it's still better than 95% of everything else on there, and if you just watch it for entertainment, it's still good. I don't get people who just want to find fault with things.

It's like the (frank)ing Starbucks cup. It appeared for like 2 seconds, but some people are more concerned with finding problems with it than actually trying to enjoy it. Know why I didn't catch things like that: because they appear in the background for 2 seconds and I'm too busy paying attention to what's going on.

It just feels weird because of how thorough it was in the beginning.

Everything shifted from being character driven to being plot driven, so it feels off when watching it.

It's still a good show, and entertaining, just not what it should have been.

The stop watching the damn show if it's that bad.

Also, if you read RW's daily blog, you'd come to realize that the Penguins are just about the worst team in the history of the NHL.

No, they're just inept. GMJR is purposefully making the Penguins bad, apparently.

The last two episodes undid years of character development...didn't really have any major issues with it until that. (Reason for not stopping watching it).
As for RW's "Sky is falling" narrative....I know, I just think I just got Triggered by those last two GOT episodes.

I don’t get the hate for the last episode. That poop was awesome. Easily one of the best episodes in the last few seasons.
