According to Andy Strickland those four refs involved in the missed hand pass have been shut down for the rest of the playoffs also

not necessarily a bad thing. i don't see OJ playing all 82 so having options to slide him into top 4 situations throughout the season won't be a bad thing. same for hughes.

while, the fragile vets won't see the full season, we shouldn't expect or want the rookies/young d to see all 82 games playing substantial minutes.

while there may be changes, the defence won't be much improved in the short term. however, you put up with the mistakes to build the d corps over time.

those expecting change AND improvement are going to be disappointed.

A least the mixed messages are consistent.
- Marwood

What about these mixed messages ?

You don't want them to use their top pick to draft a Dman
You don't want them to dig into free agency.
You don't like their prospects like OJ

But you want them to change the D

Benning: “Defencemen are deep this year, maybe not at the high end, but once you get halfway through the first round, there’s a lot that we like. If that guy is there at No. 10 we’ll be taking him.”

This makes sense to you?

It actually does if you don't take every single word literally.

We have a list of forwards that we like , if one drops down and is available at 10 we will take them , if not the D is deep.

That is not change.
OJ? Really? We'll see and hopefully this coming season but I wouldn't count on after missing much of this season following surgery.

- Marwood

With how fragile our defense is...change is inevitable. Forced change if you will.

I would prefer a forward picked in the 1st.
No, I don't want them signing UFA's.
I didn't say I didn't like prospects like OJ, you are putting words in my mouth. I doubt he is ready to start the season with the Canucks due to his injury set back last season.

Don't know about him or you but if the Canucks draft a d-man in the first round, I will seriously have a Jim Playfair-style meltdown all over these boards.

The same quality dman will be there at 40 as 10. After Byram, the quality dramatically dips....

OJ has more issues than injuries but that is another debate.

Tell me how you fix the D then.

I find it really funny that people are claiming league bias towards SJ. It's like they don't realize the hand pass miscall was a direct result of the pavelski cross check.

When they made the 5 min call against Vegas and everyone lost their minds and the league banned those refs for the rest of the playoffs, they told the remaining refs "Don't (frank)ing call it unless you see it" and what happened vs. St Louis? The sight lines were blocked and the refs didn't see it, so they didn't call it.

- NorthNuck

Is what it is. even 4 refs can't catch everything given the current speed of the game.

Looking back on the hand pass he did not have control of the puck in his hand and if you look at it directionally he had no clue where it was going lol. Just fluke it went on to the SJ players stick and he was able to pass to Karlsson for the winner. Sh!t happens.

Bettman conspiracy theory’s are ridiculous, he has no bearing on outcomes and he works for all 31 owners.

I think he obviously has a preference as to who wins but I don't think he's actually pulling strings to make it happen
- NorthNuck

True he's not outright 'fixing' games because if he got caught it would Yuge.

But 'influencial' calls can certainly be made at the right times to point teams in certain directions.

Ask Kerry Fraser and Kelly Sutherland.

I don't even think it makes sense to Benning, unless he is hinting at a trade down for a defender and another asset. I would rather just take Soderstrom at 10. There are a few forwards I would take over him in a heat beat(Zegras, Boldy, Dach) But I do not see the 3rd tier(which is where the 9th best forward would be) is better than the 2nd tier of defenders.

This article is quite funny. He states one reason not to draft the kid is that as a 17 year old he was only able to put up 4g 7pts as a 17 year old in the SHL.

https://thecanuckway.com/...ecting-victor-soderstrom/

He also points out he is bad defensively because of +/-, but omits the fact that his team was one of the worst this year.

I would take that clip and file it in Jim's founational quote box.

The Canuckway is a person who knows very little about hockey trying to be a blogger much like Canuck Clay. They really have no insight at all and should not be referenced .

Develop the prospects that have been drafted. Be patient. The Canucks are not playoff bound for another couple of seasons so there is no rush.

Well that’s your opinion and that’s fair. Fortunately teams don’t follow this imaginary “consensus.” The Canucks may very well have Soderstrom at 7 on their list. So drafting at 10 would be a steal. I’ll trust Gradin and Brackett. Personally the forwards all seem like better options in our range but I won’t complain no matter who they draft. There is no possible “Juolevi” situation as far as I can tell

Time. You manage as best you can until more of your prospects start to pan out. Playoffs shouldn’t even be a whisper in the front office for another few years.
