Tanner, Yzerman hasn't been GM of Tampa Bay for a year now. |

How about McPhee he added a top line to a contender good try tanner. Dubas is only a 3rd as good as McPhee |

Yes, he took a Leafs team that was eliminated in 7 games by the Boston Bruins in the first round...made some huge acquisitions and lead them all the way to being eliminated by the Boston Bruins in 7 games in the first round. |

Exactly. Literally did nothing to address the actual weakness of the team (Muzzin isn't it). Gave Nylander an awful contract and later admitted it was his own fault for him holding out so long. GM of the year right there. Just look at the contracts Marchand and Pastrnak agreed to. A little over one Tavares combined for twice the production! |

That makes no sense ...... Dubas has a team in cap trouble and he still hasn't addressed the same weakness the team had this time last season. Julien Brisebois built a great regular season team but forgot one minor detail, defense, experience and the ability to play in a toiugh environment wins the most important games.
The best GM is the one who built the team who have the best chance to win the cup or one who's moves made a team take the biggest step forward. The way Sweeney has retooled the Bruins he has to be in the mix. |

Not to make this a Toronto blog...
Pros
-Dubas signed the biggest FA. Worked out very well.
-Added a physical D-man which has been sorely lacking.
Cons
-Allowed the Nylander negotiation to drag on and take over the narrative of a team that was thriving without two of its best players. The fallout from the signing was evident. Personally, I think this killed the team, they weren't great after that.
-Failed to address the backup goalie situation when it was clear early enough on that Sparks was a bad gamble.
If he manages to ship out either Marleau or Zaitsev, then Mr Tanner, I might just agree with you |

Cordell - Picks Waddell over Armstrong because: "I don't love Doug Armstrong's case because he entered the season with extreme question marks in goal".
Waddell began the season with Scott Darling as their starter!!!
I guess to be an expert one only has to make logically inconsistent arguments. |

i would give dubas a nomination as well, but i would not call muzzin a #1 d.
dubas also got nylander signed to a reasonable cap friendly deal as well as matthews
now, this upcoming season has some challenges for the leafs gm that could land him the honors |

Did i miss something. When did Muzzin become a #1 dman. He was on third pairing on one the worst d units in the league. At his best he #3/4 |

Jarmo.
He flew in the face of conventional wisdom and went for it. Achieved a success that franchise never has by winning a playoff series. You don't see this enough. |

Muzzin scores about 40 points per year, while being the single best possession driving defenseman in the NHL. At 5v5 and discounting special teams, he really is one of the NHL's most effective defenseman.
On the whole, I wouldn't try to say he's top ten or anything, but he's definitely in the running after that. |

He's a solid 2nd pairing Dman, comes up with some big plays offensively and defensively. I hope they re-sign him.
Still wondering how dumbass is gonna get a true top pairing guy though, it's a desperate need. |

Muzzin is a "jack of all trades master of none" defenseman. IMO his biggest drawback is his lack of footspeed. If he was quicker, I think you would see him mentioned in more conversations about the league's top defenders. |

GM of the year is kind of an absurd word anyways because a GM's job can't be judged in one season.
GM of the year could go to Kelka CBJ guy. He succeeded at winning one round of playoffs which seems to be important to that market and could make a big difference for maintaining/growing a fan base. But if all those UFAs walk he will have done so at a huge detriment to the future of the team. |

Tanner picks Steve Yzerman (not a GM) and Torontos GM that had a player hold out and is getting bent over the table by his young forwards. |
