It will be hard to resign him not because of money or term but with Columbus's off season loss of key players Duchene might want to sign with a team that has a chance to win.

Relatively consistent scoring between 40 to 70 points. That's great haha.

This is the biggest issue. I think with Duchene Columbus could have a really good team. There's some good young players here.

But the goaltending appears to be a question mark. After so many years with bad teams, he may want more of a sure thing.

Columbus needs a goalie and Bob is leaving....this will set Columbus back 2-3 years until a new #1 can emerge via development. Nashville has Saros waiting in the wings as a capable #1 and there won't be the same drop off in talent. Varlamov may be your next best option but he has issues as well. Good Luck

CBJ is not as good as you make them out to be, they barely made the playoffs with Duch, bob and Panarin and the ONLY reason they beat Tampa was Bob played vezina quality tending. Panarin is not as huge a loss as bob would be/is IMO.

CBJ will be a lottery team next year even if they resign Duchene unless they can get a tender who can stop a puck in FA.

Guys leave teams that they've won the cup with. It all just depends on money, term and their preferences. It's not like he was in Ohio long or playing with life long friends or grew up sleeping in Blue Jackets PJs on Blue Jacket sheets. Duchene will do whatever he wants.... My bet would be he's outta there like poop thru a goose.

Depends on the type of person Duchene is, if he’s more about his contract and security, I think the Jackets can offer him the most out of any team because they’ll have cap space to burn and the ability to go 8 years. They also have enough good high end pieces that they can be competitive.

If he’s more about winning a cup and playing on a contender then other teams would be more attractive, with less question marks, no offense to the Jackets.

I think he likely signs with the Jackets, the only issue to would be the lack of playoff success in his career and whether or not he thinks the Jackets can get there reasonably quick.

He is going to make 8 mil plus per year cost of living really isn't a factor IMO. Yes, money goes further in cheaper cost of living areas, but it is kind of a moot point when you are filthy rich.

Thomas Townsend: Can CBJ re-sign Duchene?
- Thomas Townsend

Unfortunately I feel next season, unless Mrzinkis is as advertised, the CBJ will paying the credit card bill. We can look forward to Texier and perhaps Bemstrom.

Columbus will have to overpay to sign Duchene due to the departing talent and the fact that they are located in Columbus, Ohio. That, coupled with the loss of an additional 1st round pick should convince the Jackets to walk away. Otherwise they're going to get stuck with an overpriced 8-year contract and an even bigger draft pick void than they currently have.

While I am hoping you re-sign him for the extra 1st rounder Ottawa will get, I am not hopeful you will be able to retain him or Dzingel either. After watching his PR schtick for the last couple of seasons and the way he played for you, I would not expect much in terms of commitment and here's why:

1. Before he was traded to CBJ, he said the exact same things to the media about Ottawa as he was saying about Columbus, just saying these things less effusively (it's a word, look it up...) about Columbus. He said when he was in Ottawa that the locker room itself was the tightest group he's ever played with, like a brotherhood and he couldn't wait to go into battle with that group every night. Even with the great personnel, that wasn't enough to convince him to sign here on an $8M * 8 year contract even with two years of pandering by the team. You guys sold the farm for the next 2-3 years to get two rounds of playoff hockey, and there will not be much coming up the pipe after this year. What incentive does he really have to stay?

2. The departure of Panarin and Bobrovsky will have the same impact on Duchene considering resigning as what the trading of Stone and Karlsson had on him here. No one wants to resign for a team where all the big fish are jumping ship even if it does mean more money coming your way.

3. You won't believe me on this but this last point probably matters the most.Ohio is an anti-abortion state that will be a HUGE disincentive to having younger players sign here just given the extra hassles their WAGs will have to put up with in the event of unwanted or unexpected pregnancies. Despite what your political indoctrination might lead you to believe, this is a HUGE consideration about where people choose to play - the values the area you play for puts out politically. Duchene was, based on what I've seen him be involved in, a pretty progressive and liberal thinking guy with a very kind heart who would want to avoid these types of considerations as much as possible.

There is no way as a pro athlete you want your brand tarnished by having to touch issues like this with a ten foot clown pole, and the idiocy being put out there in states like Ohio, Tennessee, Missouri, Alabama, and the rest will impact the willingness of some people to play for cities in those jurisdictions. Values matter a lot, guys, and this is a much larger consideration for players and their families than a lot of fans want to acknowledge.

Duchene is a player who now has the power and ability to choose where he wants to go. My prediction is it is more likely he signs with a new team or resigns in Ottawa than stays in Columbus because it is a) closer to his hometown and family b) he was more complementary to Ottawa's players and staff in his public statements than CBJ outside of Uber-gate, and c) there will be a deeper pool of prospects and future growth potential than in Columbus given the fire sale that's happened just to make it to where CBJ did this year.

Sorry, all, I know the truth hurts, but it would be in your interest to just let him walk and keep your pick next season than to have him in the fold. You don't want to end up like we did when we acquired him with no potential top-6 forward or d man being drafted to your team after the basement tire fire that will ensue next year after losing your top 3-4 players.

the Jackets will have to match Ottawa's deal at least.
The quiet word around Ottawa is that the deal he turned down, he turned down to get Ottawa the pick, and to have a chance at deep play off run. And he was told that deal would still be on the table for him in the off season. (minus that extra year of course)

grain of salt stuff...but Garrioch had no part of this one...so you can confirm it's at least 50% true

Abortion laws got it ....this has to be the dumbest rant ive seen in a while, you expect him to sign in that dumpster fire called the Senators when the owner said he wants like 15 prospects starting next season, he's being sued for 700 million in the LeBreton flat project and he's operating a bare-bone front office for the Sens.

Seriously, this blogg is more of an opinion not a surety, you seem hellbent on seeing your former Sens not sign with the jackets.....because
