Karine Hains: What If... We finally know which two teams will duke it out come Monday to get to raise Lord Stanley's Cup, the old enemy, aka the Boston Bruins and the St.Louis Blues. Amongst the Blues' key players is Ryan O'Reilly in whom Marc Bergevin was reported to be very interested at last draft...

You're equating Max Pacioretty with Patrick Berglund? And... you realize Blues paid extra to get them to take Sobotka, that 2nd probably would have been a 4th if you just remove Sobotka from the equation entirely, no one wanted that cap hit.

I think you are wildly over-estimating what the equivalent package from the Habs would have been. Byron, a first, a fourth, and whoever your 4th best prospect is, probably the equivalent to what Blues paid.

And even then you are not comparing apples to apples. For the Bluse, they were making a move to WIN NOW. They were looking for that piece to take them to the next level. They found it.

For the habs, it would have been a move toward a re-build. O'Reilly may have been a key piece going forward, but losing prospect and picks would be a tough pill to swallow for the Habs. Still, it may have been worth it. To have your #1 center position locked in for the next 6-7 years is a BIG step in a rebuild. Depends on if they saw O'Reilly as that guy. My take, is that he is a better fit on a Blues team already pretty solid than he would have been on a Habs team with still many holes....especially up front. I think Habs made the right move backing away....I also think Blues made the right decision going "All-in". I predict Bruins win the Cup, but Blues have a legitimate shot and the addition of O'Reilly has already paid off...Blues needed this trip to the Finals.

Putting Patches in the discussion as he was reported to be the main piece the Blues were after, not equating him to Berglund...

No argument here, backing away was the right thing to do, we didn't have the depth to pull that kind of move.

I hope you're wrong about Boston winning the cup though, at the very least I want a good battle and that I'm sure we'll have. Enough with the sweeps already this year

It's like going after Kessel. It's not a move a rebuilding team should be doing. He's not the missing piece to anything. Mtl is far away from a contender right now. We are still a few years away when our prospects will start to have an impact on this team.

It has nothing to do with Kessel being a bad player. It's just not how you build a winning team. Draft, draft and draft. Then sign a guy here or make a trade there. But you need to build your own core.

Most teams that were in the 2nd round were not considered contenders either though, not saying they're on the cusp on greatness but they barely missed the playoffs in a year full of upsets, which will happen more and more with parity....

Walford and Tyszka need to sign by June 1st or the Habs lose their rights

Walford removed "Habs prospect" from his Twitter account. Guess both won't be signed.
