Tyler Cameron: Re-Draft Friday: 2013
Welcome back to re-draft Friday. Today we're looking at 2013.

Before we dive in, a couple of updates from Blackhawks' World, then let's dissect the Hawks draft.

Seems pretty solid based on where they were picking...

Guentzel three picks after Hayden in the 3rd would have been nice, though I get the feeling that hitting pay dirt in the 3rd round and beyond has a pretty big luck factor. They got a tradable asset in Motte at the end of the 4th, not bad. This draft looks pretty lean, otherwise. Usually you get a handful of surprise successes in the late rounds, but not so much this time around. And MacKinnon was the clear number one pick in retrospect, also.

While I don't know if he's the coach to get us back to the promised land, I'm glad to see the Hawks giving JC autonomy. Couldn't agree more with TommyHawk and other posters in the previous thread that the best teams/organizations find a way to make their pieces work.

Gus (for all of his defensive deficiencies) put up 60 points last year which is no small task in the NHL. I understand the allure of trading him at peak value, but we've got to find a way to make our "misfits" fit together.

Oh, and here's to the Hawks drafting Cozens!

TC said: The biggest surprise would be the Americans, who had a really good team that went overseas – it looks like they could have used some better goaltending – but nonetheless, a solid team.

I say: isn’t this two years for Kane with the “C”? A bronze and a nothing.

The US men’s team seems to usually disappoint - no medals in the last two Olympics (without NHL players last time), a couple of bronzes in the World’s - juniors seem to do better.

I wonder (without checking for evidence) whether or not the Stanley Cup playoffs affects the USA team in the World’s.

Man this is a hard call. I see the allure of Gus and his points but I also see the downside of his game. If his defense was average you could live with him but his defense is significantly below average. You saw with Tampa that the regular season means squat. They have too many regular season players, guys who can't play defense when it mattwrs and who are averse to rolling up their sleeves, sweating and willing to take some lumps. I can't believe there is a single Hawk fan who believes Gus falls into the playoff player category.

There is so much to like and so much to dislike about Gus' game. The optimist in me hopes the coaching staff can instill a more defensive work man like approach. The realist says he's a regular season player who can play defense and it's time to sell high.

I see Flyers pick 11th overall samuel Morin hasn't played a single NHL game. Everyone above him 200+
Most of first round 100 or more....

What's his story???....just a BUST...or injury or something??

Colliton - let us hope - will be a good development coach, I think - his demeanor, seeming reliance / emphasis on process will lead to good development of the younger players and the implementation of a good 200 foot game.

Whether that coaching skill can also translate into being a winning coach with a Cup-competitive team - a team that’s supposed to win after all of the “development” -remains to be seen.

Doug Collins going from “A” to “B” - couldn’t take the next step - needed Big Chief Triangle to get from “B” to “C”. Colliton may wind up being very successful - but with someone else leading the championship charge.

Good call on Marco Dano. I DID forget aboot him. Thought he would turn out a decent player.

Is the memorial cup just on sportsnet? Want to watch that game tonight. (Guelph coming back on all those deficits is amazing)

I think he has had injury issues. The Flyers signed him to a three year extension last summer, so they must still think there's potential there. Then again, that was under Hextall's watch, so who knows what Fletcher thinks of him. I don't know if he is available, but he would be an interesting add if the price was low.

I’d say the best value pick would be Jake Guentzel in the 3rd round. Kid hit 40 goals this year and is a ppg player in the playoffs

Sure, let's give the guy with 1 winning season in 6 more autonomy!
That's like giving Paul Walker the keys to a Porsche Carrera GT.
You can hope for the best, but it's more likely he crashes it into a lamp post.

I think it will be a very busy offseason not only because of the number of new GM’s, but where these new GM’s are. Detroit, EDM, Philly.

I’ll be interested to see how much roster turnover there is on these teams.

No! It has nothing to do with giving the keys of a Porsche to someone. Of course you give the coach autonomy. What are you suggesting? Giving a coach his assistants who may or may not be on board with his tactics and strategy? Then having the GM create his practice and game plans? If they did that you'd female dog that the coach is being meddled with.

As far as 2nd rounders in the 2013 draft, Hagg would be a pretty decent 3rd pair defender. Good defense and hits a ton.

Bertuzzi is a fairly good middle 6 power forward. Plays well with the other young Wings in Larkin, Athanasiou, and Mantha.

Compher is turning into a pretty good bottom 6 energy forward. He always seems to be a Blackhawks killer whenever we play the Avs.

Zykov was supposed to be a highly rated prospect but just can’t seem to get off the ground. Didn’t realize he bounced around from the Canes to the Oil to the Knights last season.

And the Hawks had Dauphin for a hot second. He supposedly has potential to be a solid 4C similar to Kruger and Kampf.

I was being snarky. No one JC could hire will help. He has a history of sucking.

Brock Nelson - 6Y/$36MM for 53 points.

No way Strome doesn't get $7MM+ next summer.

JC is a placeholder until the roster is strong enough to contend again. No legit NHL coach would have walked into the current situation. I suspect that the front office knew that before they made JC the offer.

Two to three more years guys if SB fills the right holes with the right players. Longer if not.
