Brock Nelson - 6Y/$36MM for 53 points.

No way Strome doesn't get $7MM+ next summer.

- Return of the Roar

Meh...one guy has 6 years in the league barely missing any games while being a consistent contributor and the other has 106 games over 3 seasons and only recently with Chicago landed a secure NHL role.

I like Strome, but everyone around here acts like he is a proven top guy when he really isn't yet. He had strong 2/3 of an NHL season to date. He may continue on and cement his role and get paid, but each situation is different. Strome still has to prove he is worth it IMO. Way too early to just assign him a huge contract.

JC is a placeholder until the roster is strong enough to contend again. No legit NHL coach would have walked into the current situation. I suspect that the front office knew that before they made JC the offer.

Two to three more years guys if SB fills the right holes with the right players. Longer if not.

- Return of the Roar

Oh come on! Lot's of "legit NHL coaches" have walked into situations far worse than the Blackhawks. If they have a choice I'm sure they choose the team who has the best chance to win now, otherwise an out of work NHL coach would take the job. JC may or may not turn out to be a good NHL coach but neither you or I know if he will.

Re: Jake Guentzel

I wrote a nice profile on Jake that year, and I knew he was gonna linger because small is / was small and that was the ways of the period STILL!

You see how I use that idea that so many drafts go to a large equal hope you got the guy who is going to develop at around the picks after slot 20?

It happens here again.

I was thinking something similar. Nelson has a longer track record and more leverage to negotiate a favorable long-term contract extension. Strome isn't there yet. IMO, Strome signs a 2-3 year bridge deal so he can prove consistency first, then cash in later.

DeBrincat, though, is likely to skip over a bridge deal straight to a long-term one. Whether he goes bridge or long-term, I expect DeBrincat's AAV to be more than Strome's AAV.

Not expecting another Wonder Twins scenario with identical terms. If anything, DeBrincat and Strome's new contracts will just get announced at the same press conference.

I just said this a few days ago, glad we're in agreement, BB. I hope he continues on what he started with the hawks & continues to develop and hit his 3rd overall ceiling. He shouldn't make Adb money.

I see Flyers pick 11th overall samuel Morin hasn't played a single NHL game. Everyone above him 200+
Most of first round 100 or more....

What's his story???....just a BUST...or injury or something??

- hawk35

My brother is a huge Flyers fan and still thinks he's got a future in PHI.

Thinks he'll be on the team full time next year.

With you guys as well.

I think you see a bridge deal for Strome next which would work out for both parties.

Strome continues to show he's a top 6 forward in the NHL and work towards a bigger payday.

CHI makes sure last year wasn't a farce and will be happy to pay him at a later date if that's the case.

It's possible they just wait until next summer to re-sign Strome. If he has another 70ish point (pace) season that might be enough for the Hawks.

Good call on this guy, Wiz. I don't attend games much anymore, but when I do sometimes a player I see for the first time makes me ask "who is THAT guy?" Jake Guentzel was one of those guys for me. He had great vision, anticipation, and quickness. He was sticking his nose in all over the ice. Absolutely knew where to be. all the time.

No! It has nothing to do with giving the keys of a Porsche to someone. Of course you give the coach autonomy. What are you suggesting? Giving a coach his assistants who may or may not be on board with his tactics and strategy? Then having the GM create his practice and game plans? If they did that you'd female dog that the coach is being meddled with.

They will absolutely wait until next summer - yes - you do need to see last year was not a one time thing. And that is when I think he will prove he is a legit 2C.

Only way he signs a bridge deal is if he slips next year. It is not in Strome's best financial interest to sign a bridge deal if he proves to be the real thing.

No one gives discounts anymore.

So as a result, if Strome does prove to be a solid 2C next season the cap woes will continue.

I said it months ago - the 12/17 combo will cost between $13-15MM/year to retain.

And that is why there will be no FA signings of significance until next summer - and then - only if they don't have to pay that kind of money to 12/17.

The only way we see significant personnel changes until then is player for player trades.

Nor should they. Players should be paid fairly, for this us this is a game for them it's their livelihood.

Including owners, TV networks....why should the players - the only actors in the drama taking injury risk, with limited-time careers, and the only reasons we watch in the first place.

I'd gladly accept cap woes if it gives us a chance to win. In today's salary cap era, being good at maths is as important as being good at talent evaluation. Hossa's deal hurt our cap space but I'd take that deal any day because Hossa was worth every penny and more.

I know many don't put much stock in the Hockey News so take this article FWIW. It's about 9 top prospects playing in the World Championships. Kurashev and Jokiharju are featured. Nothing overly analytical. The Canucks are the only other team with multiple featured prospects (Demko and Hughes).

Philipp Kurashev, C, Switzerland (Chicago Blackhawks)
For a lot of Blackhawks fans, Kurashev did wonders to his stock in the team’s farm system. After finishing as Switzerland’s best player at the world juniors a few months back with six goals and seven points, Kurashev has followed it up with four points through seven games in his first men’s international tournament. Chicago signed Kurashev back in March after drafting him in 2018 (120th overall), and he’ll likely play in the AHL next season, but Blackhawks fans have to be excited about his international play this year.

Henri Jokiharju, D Finland (Chicago Blackhawks)
Jokiharju typically is one of the best offensive defensemen on any team he’s on but, with just two assists at his first World Championship, he’s been quiet on the scoresheet. But don’t mistake that with him having a tough tournament: Jokiharju has put a big focus on refining his defensive game, and he’s one of the biggest reasons why Finland entered the quarterfinal as one of the best defensive teams in the tournament. Jokiharju proved he could hang with the best in Chicago this year and will fight for a top-four spot before you know it.

Gotta agree on the Jokiharju assessment. It's gonna be hard to knock him out of a top 4 slot.

Kurachev is a comer and his development continues as he keeps facing tougher competition in tournaments. He has a shot at making the Hawks this fall.

And before Stan unloads big coin on Strome, he will be watching Kurashev's play closely because he just may be the better player.

Is the memorial cup just on sportsnet? Want to watch that game tonight. (Guelph coming back on all those deficits is amazing)

He would be in the top 4 if the season started today but let's see how the team looks in October.

There will be at least 1 new dman and a couple that aren't here anymore.

I love Kurashev and he's slowly turning into my favourite Hawks prospect.

He's got a great overall game. Love his hockey sense. He was on PP1 for Switzerland and didn't look out of place at all at the World Championships against NHLers and other pros.

Total diamond in the rough. I hope his international and junior experience can translate into pro success. I'm not expecting him to play in Chicago next season, but hopefully it won't take too long.
