HockeyBuzz Hotstove: Thoughts on Brock Nelson's long-term extension with the New York Islanders?

James Tanner, an idiot: Brock Nelson's deal is terrible

Me, a veritable genius: Brock Nelson has scored more 5v5 goals over the last three seasons than Forsberg, Eberle, Pacioretty, and Palmieri and had more 5v5 points last season than Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Drouin, E. Staal, and Hischier

Some of these comments are pretty laughable. Brock is in his prime, finally has a decent coach, has a proven track record of 20+ goals a season. He was fantastic 2 way player all year and even better in the Playoffs. This is a LOT less than he would have gotten UFA (which if he signed away July 1 all the same pundits would have KILLED the Isles for letting him get away.. like Okposo, Nielsen, .etc.)

Hmm, so Lou is the worst GM?

Hey Tanner, take a closer look at what boy wonder is doing in Arizona. He turned Domi and Strome into Galchenyuk and Schmaltz. Bwahahaha. Then he signs Schmaltz to a ridiculous contract of $5.85M x 7 years. Oh I forgot, you think Schmaltz might be a 90-point player so this was a genius move by Chayka. Forgot about that. He's got Christian Dvorak locked up at $4.45M x 6 years. He scored 2 goals in 20 games last year. Solid production! Then he has Chychrun at $4.6M x 6 years despite constantly getting hurt, and falling down the depth chart before finally getting scratched. Could have just signed him to short-term bridge deal.

But OK. Chayka >>>> Lou

Got it.

I cannot believe the overreaction to this deal by so many people

should the Isles have let another UFA center walk for nothing?

I dont get it

You're right they should have let him walk and taken their chances in free agency where they could have maybe landed a player that everyone would've said they overpaid

It's incredible. Lou should be fired for not getting Nelson on a 3 year 9 Million dollar deal.

As an islander fan, I don’t love the contract in a vacuum. That being said, we don’t operate in a world free of context.

I’d like for anybody bashing this deal to explain the alternative for the Isles. Duchene? Sure but there’s no guarantee he takes your money and then you’re out both centers. Hayes? He’s probably Nelson’s level and price so really you’re just shuffling chairs on the titanic there. Trade? That would’ve been my choice, but who? Centers are notoriously hard to acquire.

They had $35M in cap space. They’ve at least guaranteed themselves a decent 2C for the next few years.

For less money the Coyotes locked up Schmaltz for a year longer and he is 23. He has the same career high in points as Nelson. Also, how does the sound of laughter start with a "b"? I find this highly confusing.

Terrible contract. 1 50 point season by age 28.

Something something Nylander millions overpaid Dubas bent over?

Tanner is right though. The Dubas bashing has been ridiculous over the Nylander deal.

I see you're still having autistic fits of rage over the Nylander deal, an irrelevant comparison unless a 22yo RFA winger is suddenly comparable to a 27yo UFA center

I don't know Nelson enough as a player to opine on the value of his contract, but I feel pretty confident there are two people with the Habs who are having opposite reactions to this contract at the moment. Bergevin is all smiles, while Gallagher is...not (or shouldn't be).

I know they are not the same position (centre/wing) but they have comparable numbers and Gallagher is a far less expensive proposition.

But good for Brock Nelson. I'm sure he's a happy camper today (and every day for the next little while).

if Nylander was a UFA available to the highest bidder, I think it's safe bet he'd have gotten a contract from one of the other 30 teams higher than what he got from the Leafs

this is NHL contracts 101

when did everyone around here get dumb?

Freaking out several times about it because his feeble mind couldn't distinguish the difference between a couple of people criticizing the Nylander deal and everybody criticizing the Nylander deal

I mean I am not the biggest fan of Nelson like everyone knows but the deal is fair. Considering if he went to the open market some team would of def highly over paid for him
