What is SJ's ultimate goal here? I mean, yeah, Malreau can still be an effective player on a 3rd line or 2nd line plug, but SJ needs to start thinking long-term here. Their core is old as (frank), but they have enough solid young players where they can add more young players and keep their window going.

This is just more EK bullcrap speculation. Everything has a price and if the Sharks take Marleau back it will be because they extracted a large price out of the Leafs.

Leafs clearly need to dump Marleau's salary, so they should send him to whomever is willing to take him without sending any salary back.

IMO the Leafs should look to packaging Kadri and Marleau with renting 50% of Marleau's salary. They may be able to get a Gardiner replacement while still free up space for the other pieces.

I really like Marleau and hope they end up keeping him. He's been a good player and a really good presence for the young guys.

Leafs are looking to dump salary. And not take much if any back so they can resign guys. San Jose has little salary left. They are not taking on Marleau without sending salary back. This idea makes 0 sense.

Marleau hasn't scored 50 points since 2014-2015. He turns 40 this season and is on the decline. This year he only put up 37 points. To say he's a 50 point player is ....

Also, teams have leverage over the leafs.
1) Marleau wants to go to a West coast team. Limits options to LA, Anaheim, San Jose.
2) Toronto has to clear ALOT of cap space to sign Marner + Kap + Johnsson +.
