Tyler Cameron: Re-Draft Friday: 2016
The Blackhawks were coming off of a 103-point season, which was good for 3rd in the Central and Patrick Kane was coming off his first-ever Hart Trophy.
Unfortunately, the Hawks weren't happy; they lost in 7 games to the St. Louis Blues in the 1st round.
How'd they make out in the 2016 draft? |

Taylor Raddysh taken 58 would have been a nice addition instead of Kayumov taken at 50. Hawks could have had the old Erie line of Cat, Strome, Raddysh. |

Tyler, any thoughts on how Stan allocates $$$$ to DeBrincat ahead of the coming expansion draft and new CBA? Does it make sense to give fewer dollars, more term, now for a 40 goal scorer or see how the season plays out?
I think that Stan would be willing to "pay up" for DeBrincat based upon 2 quality years in the organization, and more "wait and see" with Strome... |

Who did Montreal pick in the 2nd round from the Philip Danault (and a 2nd rounder) for Dale Weise and Tomas Fleischman trade?
Likewise, the Hawks sent their 1st rounder to Winnipeg in that Ladd trade. Who did Winnipeg select?
How did those picks turn out ? |

If San Jose is offering Erik Karlsson 11 million per year over 8 years they will regret it in the long term. Injuries are starting to become a factor for him on a reoccurring basis. Torn achilles, followed up by a couple ankle injuries that resulted in hairline fractures and off-season surgery where they as per Karlsson "removed half his ankle bone" and replaced part of his ankle with artificial tendon. Now it is groin issues and groin surgery. He is a high octane guy, but at age 29 handing him top dollar and term would be silly. |

I know it is large vs small sample size, but EK and Gus have fairly similar stats (not goals and assists, but advanced). they both are positive Corsi and Fenwick, both negative on giveaway vs takeaway, and both have more offensive zone starts than defensive/neutral. I'm not saying that they are the same player, but for what you are going to get out of each, I'm not sure that I wouldn't go with Gus for 4 years and a much lower number. |

If the Hawks pick Turcotte, Cozens, Byram, Dach or whomever I'm good with that. Bowman and Co. do the research, they do in depth analysis, their jobs are dependant on selecting the right guy while we as fans play make believe GM for 3 weeks with almost no real understanding of all the prospects involved, having only seen one or two play live and never interviwing them. If Bowman chooses Turcotte I'm good with that but me as make believe GM want to see Byram selected. |

Amen. At the end of the day, they know better than we do, and either way we are adding a very talented player to the pipeline. We’re fortunate to be picking where we are, so whoever is picked will have my blessing - which as we all know, Stan and Co. need
I’m fully on the Byram train though, and have been since it was made unlikely that the team takes Podkolzin. |

We fans don´t have half the info about these young players that Hawks scouts have. They´ll pick who they think is best for the Hawks long term. Still there won´t be any quarantees. If they choose Turcotte, Byram, Cozens or someone else with that #3 pick that is going to be one they believe in most. Let´s not pretend we know better. |

To me, Gus is a little bit of a poor mans Karlsson, but will never be as dominant or hit that same peak or have so many seasons putting up production since he is already 26. I think that is all obvious and there is no way Gus commands money that matches what Karlsson is going to get.
That said, Gus proved a fair bit last season. He was 22nd in total Even Strength ice time for skaters in the league last year and 27th in average EVEN TOI per game. Keith was 9th and 16th in those same categories. Love him or hate him, Gus was our #2 guy on D last year overall. He won't be a shutdown guy, but if he is on the team when the season starts I don't see his usage changing unless something changes.
A youngster stepping up and earning more time or a trade happening. With Keith's age climbing, it is entirely possible that Gus will play more even strength minutes than Keith and lead the team in that regard. Once JC took over the team, Keith was 20:03 minutes even strength TOI and Gus was 19:33, with the next closest being Murphy at 17:22. I know quality of competition, deployment and special teams all factor into some arguments on who might be considered what on the blueline, but just saying for regular shifts that is how it played out. |

It sure does. No surprises really.
On Monday, I will have my Dylan Cozens article.
Then, I will have my final selection on Tuesday/Wednesday.
I am starting to hear a couple things on my end - I just want to validate the source before I say anything.
You guys and gals can expect a blog a day next week. My content calendar was already jammed... now there are some rumours trickling in.
This could get really fun.

Without spoiling anything, on a scale of Cole Caufield to Zdeno Chara, how big are the rumors you’re hearing?
Would imagine “rumors” are more seismic than in years past, but would assume that it’s a relatively quiet offseason anyhow. |

Thanks for all the content and discussion Tyler, I think there's a lot of readers (myself included) that are posting more as a result.
Do you think we'll see any Blackhawks activity until July 1? Seems like the big taking off point with free agency opening and AA's NMC expiring. |

Tyler in your opinion do you think the hawks will make a blockbuster trade or signing?

The tiebreaker change as recommended by the Competition Committee is very interesting. It is likely the first tiebreaker will be wins in regulation, as opposed to Regulation and overtime.
Step in the right direction I think. |

I don't think you are going to get a "blockbuster" signing unless they are able to move out some high salary player for picks/prospects. They have a bit of money available, but they need to make sure they don't overcommit to anything with ADB and Strome (and Kahun to a lesser extent) coming soon.
I think if anything is going to be in the "major" category, it will be via trade. There is a FAR outside chance that Seabrook or Keith might waive, but they have not given any indication that way thus far.
Running with that theme though, would anyone do a Seabrook for Eriksson swap with Vancouver? About the same cap hit and a few less years. Can probably hide LE easier than 7 as they age...
