Guy started playing for the Penguins in 2013, one year after he was drafted, so he's been in the league since 19 and has contributed a bunch of those years. Penguins got a lot of good miles on him. He's an unfortunate victim of poor cap management by Rutherford. |

I like what you did there.
He isnt stuck with JJ. He can buy Jack Johnson out tomorrow if he wants. The cap implications are relatively minor and Burkle/Lemieux would foot the bill in a second. The problem is either he doesnt want to admit his problem signing him last season or he doesnt see the problem. JJ played this season exactly as he did over his career... which is below average hockey. If Rutherford didnt see if before he signed him, not sure why he'd see it now. I hope he does and he is looking to move on from him. Trading Maatta now gives you 6 NHL defensemen plus a good 7th guy. However, that bottom pairing is now making $7.25M between the 2 of them. That is absolutely insane. Something has to give there. No way you can go into camp with that set up.
Maatta has had his problems. Started a couple of years ago with his cancer diagnosis so that had him miss a chunk of games during that season. OVer the last few years, yes a bunch of nagging injuries. He isnt a big body and doesnt play a rough style, but he has had his share of bad luck. He's a good dude, I met him a few times around town. Hope he does well in Chicago. |

I'm pretty sure that this means he's here... Oh well. Maybe Riikola can step up to the next level. (Hopeful thinking) |

Maatta appears to be a 3rd pairing dman on the pens roster. Kahun brings back the speed game that helped the Pens to back-to-back cups. I think it was a pretty good hockey trade for the pens. I definitely don’t see Johnson/Gudbransson being the 3rd line. I’m hoping to see a Johnson buyout |

Do you really want Jack Johnson being on the Pens Cap for the next 8 years? |

Pitt has an internal policy of not buying guys out. I don't like it but it's the way they do business and most guys, with Brassard being the lone exception I've heard about, seem to be fans of how the Pens run things. |

The next 3 years is all that matters and the cap hit isn't very punitive. Especially next year....I think it's under 300k. Look at it this way, Pens fans would rather have a competent 2mil player than JJ at 3.....who is plain awful. They can likely pay a bottom pairing D 1mil and get a better player. Maybe they can sucker somebody into a trade and eat a little salary. However they do it, they need him off the roster.
Like Vic says above, it's moot anyway..... The Pens don't buy out players. |

Two cups, two major injuries and having had cancer... yeah, he feels like he has had a full career already. |

Too bad he didn’t just retire before Bowman decided to trade for his slow ass. |
