It would also give them 5 players aged 34 or older, which would be the most in the NHL.
The only teams with more than 3 are Detroit, Minnesota and Anaheim.
- BINGO!
On the other hand, any reasonable rebuild (non-Oilers/Sabres) should have veterans around to support the youth movement. Gotta decide what's too many, I guess.
Suter will be a boon for their D corps despite that contract and Parise and Staal brings all the elements you want from veteran scorers (when healthy) to help in the top-6. If they can add him on a short term deal that staggers their contracts, I see no reason to shy away.
Fiala- Staal (2yr)- Zucker (4yr)
Parise (6yr)- Donato- Pavelski (3yr)
Greenway- Koivu (1yr)- Kunin
Suter (6yr)- Spurgeon (re-sign; 5yr)
Brodin (2yr)- Dumba (4yr)
That's a pretty soft landing for any young prospect to step into and, if the plan is a rebuild anyway, the cap hit won't impact that. During the final years of their contracts, to trade them around the deadline to add assets for the build and thus veterans gradually fade out as youth eases in.
Of course this requires they draft well and have a steady pipeline of players.
