Nyquist, Donskoi, Johanson and Zuccarello are all good names.
Add JT Miller and T.Johnson to the list of good options to acquire. |

Over pay by at least 600k. For 7 years he should have gotten 6.1 |

I think 5.5M would be ideal |

Who knows what those guys are going to cost at this point. If Hayes gets $7M, Nyquist is surely worth $7M and Zuccarello probably closer to $7 than $6M.
I think you are right though. The Pens need to keep an eye on Tampa and Toronto. Both teams have some tough decisions to make and will lose players for packages based around picks/prospects, not roster players.
I've brought this up before and I'm 100% sure this is not even a thought for JR, but I'd attempt moving either Johnson or Gudbranson (preferably Johnson) for Marleau. Marleau's offensive ability has obviously declined, but his speed hasn't. Marleau can be an effective player for this team IMO.
A short-term overpay for long-term freedom. |

Carryover...
I think Nyqvist would be a nice addition but only if we traded Hornqvist. I would hate to trade Kessel and then have him, in essence, be replaced with Nyqvist at $6-7M. There's no net gain there. |

What does Couturier think now? He's way underpaid compared to this deal. |

Donskoi is a guy that would probably be affordable for the Pens. I've always like Johansson, but he's missed a ton of game the last couple of years. Zucc and Nyquist probably cost too much.
Hint, hint.... Gunner should do an "under the radar" column. Guys that won't be signed in the first couple of days, but will likely add nice value to the roster. |

Donskoi at this point likely to get $4Mish and that's too much. The Pens need to steer clear of this UFA market and look towards trades.
Use a pick/prospect pacakge to grab Miller, Johnson or Killorn from Tampa or like I suggested, move Johnson for Marleau.
They could probably even get Hyman or Brown from Tampa for a mid-level prospect. |

@Barnsby that’s probably the exact order in how I’d target a FA forward. Donskoi and Nyqvist Being my top two. I think the blue line is a much bigger priority to upgrade though. |

I don’t think 4 mil for Donskoi is too much. That actually sounds like a super good deal. He’s produced at a 1st line rate the past two seasons and always had good underlying numbers. I remember him vividly from the SCF a few years back. |

Yes it is a lot but the Brock Nelson contract set the trend. your 50-60 point guys are going to be this much going forward. It is an over payment but it isnt a large one.
This is the market. |

Blog quality has been a bummer here for a while now. “Hayes, too much?” Heck, RW didn’t put up much of argument one way or the other! He notes that Hayes has good underlying numbers but doesn’t state what they are or who it’s relative to. The one area that he mentions is that his most common linemates aren’t great, which a schmuck like me said last blog that his QoT will be better in Philly. Tanner may be wrong A LOT but I respect that he puts his opinions out there
If Turris at 6x6 is the comp then I would say Hayes is younger and has a higher ceiling and is the better all around player so he deserves more. If the cap rises to 81.5MM. So apples to apples Hayes would get 6.15. Is Hayes 1MM better than Turris? I think he could be but it’s really just the market that pushed the number up. If you’re going to blame anyone then Skinner and his agent should be at the top of the list. If he takes $8MM there’s no way Hayes gets 7.14, maybe it pushes him back down to 6.5 which is probably where he should be |

Marleau has a NTC and said he’s only going west to be with his family but I agree with your reasoning. I would do it in a heartbeat |

Mine too. I feel like both Nyquist and Donskoi would be excellent fits to the Penguins.
Would you be fine with this?

No offense Mike but I disagree. I don’t think these players are under the radar at all. Guys like Grabner for example go early on Canada Day every year especially now that teams can talk to these guys ahead of time. The guys that will linger the longest are the guys coming off these longer deals that are holding out for more money, such as Pominville. If he decides to sign below his actual value because he wants a certain spot, then he’s go quickly. There are certainly teams in the market for top 6 help, but there’s also a lot of teams who aren’t and will go straight to these players |

I mean, no? If something were to happen where we traded Kessel for a defenseman of comparable value and we added Donskoi in free agency as a replacement RW, I think that’d be good, but I think the chances of that are super small due to Phil’s NTC and the cap probably wouldn’t work out. |

If we do move Kessel I would love Connolly from Washington. One of my favorite UFA's this year. Last season he was given a 150% increase in ice time at 5v5 and his production doubled! His shooting percentage was at his career average too. He was able to generate twice as many shots in a top 6 role and was rewarded without seeing a drastic increase in his shooting%. 40+ 5v5 points is very good
He is also 6'3 and isn't a bad skater. I'd be more than fine with signing a guy like that if Phil is moved for cap space. |

I wasn't saying those players mentioned are "under the radar". I was referring to players that nobody is talking about. I don't follow other teams all that much. Especially out west (I have a pretty good grasp on most players in the east). I'm sure there's more than a few players that could be signed for affordable money that could help this club. Personally, I'm not sold on ZAR. I think we need to see much more from Blueger. I wouldn't consider those guys being locks for the roster. |

Probably over paid by $1m. What is sad is that the cap is such poop that teams actually need to care about over paying by $1m. Pathetic |
