Here's Ryan Wilson's take on Chayka. Doesn't seem to high on him and he's an analytics guy.

"John Chayka gets labeled being an analytics general manager because they supposedly track a lot of data. It doesn’t mean he uses it or is good at using it. The Coyotes traded up to get a player that likely would have fallen to them anyways in Victor Soderstrom. Perhaps they were nervous on the run of defenseman who haven’t shown the ability to produce points. The Coyotes panic turned into the Flyers gain. They not only moved back to #14 overall from #11, but they actually took a defenseman (Cameron York) who does have an offensive pulse."

Honestly, it was a head scratcher to move up.

Not really, we have no idea how they value these players. Apparently Soderstrom was their first choice after Hughes and Kakko. They also got word that Florida was going to trade with Philly and make the same pick.

I think all of these picks are so random, and all the "analysis" is based pretty much on nothing ( I mean, who has seen any of these guys enough to have a valid opinion and also happens to write hockey blogs?) so if a team actually feels strongly about a player, go for it!

The analytics say you should never trade up, and in fact they also say it's usually better to trade your pick, or at least move down. So knowing this, I believe the Coyotes must truly feel they've picked a special player.

Time will tell.

I can't say that because I never heard of this guy until last night.

Meh, #45 pick. I haven't looked but I'm sure the Yotes have plenty of picks or could have at anytime, when they want to eat another poopty deal.

I remember being furious when we selected Keller. So many good options on the board at #7 and we go with this tiny forward projected to go 13th. Keller has gone in to be a top 5 player from that draft so far.

People thought he was dumb trading the #7 pick but he said there was no one they loved at that spot so they dumped it and sure enough there’s been little promise from the guys picked around that spot in that draft.

Similar thoughts for PO Joseph and Hayton. But they haven’t missed yet, and while there’s a few that the jury is still out on, all signs point to them being good choices.

With all that said, I liked Soderstrom anyways, but hearing that Chaykas team watched him hundreds of times, interviewed all of his coaches and family and friends, did a mental assessment on him, etc....and fell in love with him. That makes me feel completely happy with this pick!!

Yes! Killjoys. Fairly obscure song pick too. Must have been a fan of the band to make that selection.

here's a interesting exercise:

go back through the last several drafts and ask yourself if you'd rather have the #11 drafted player or the # 14 and # 45

AZ had to move up if they really wanted him, FL possibly would've taken him at 13. Seider and Broberg were already gone, he was the third dman that FL (imo) was most interested in picking. With those three gone, FL took the goalie.

I'd say he's still about 7th, where he was selected. Maybe 6th.

Matthews, McAvoy, Tkachuk, DeBrincat, Laine, Dubois/Keller.

Pretty good chance they heard someone wanted him, that’s typically how it works. Canucks didnt trade down because NYR were also high on Pettersson, for example. You’ve got to beat certain teams out.
