Jets Defense is in shambles... Chevy has some heavy lifting to do just to get this back to respectability... He must be looking at trading to build this back up as not much is available in the UFA market that fits our budget... Lovejoy, McQuaid, Chariot, Sbisa, Benn, Pouliot, Wideman? None of these names gives me much hope.

Morrissey / Byfuglien
Kulikov / Pionk
Niku/ Poolman
Beaulieu/ Stanley?

I for one am exited to see Niku and Poolman both play larger roles, i think they will be equal if not better than some of the D we had last year.

I too am looking forward to the Jets "draft and develop" model for their defense, which should only take 3 to 4 years to complete.

I dont think so, both Samberg and Heinola or in the lineup to start next season, Chevy has to consider that with moves made for this year. If Niku and Poolman play well thats two more spots with Morrisey and Buff rounding out the top 6, possibly Pionk as well?

we can not soley focus on this year without an eye on the future.

I totally agree. We have seen enough of them to know they can play at this level. There might be some tough going but they need to play. Poolman should have been a regular already in his first season and Niku is also ready to graduate full time.

Too bad Samberg is going back to college. The word is he is NHL ready now. I hope he doesn’t pull a Jimmy Visy on the Jets and they can sign him at the end of this year.

Poolman is 26 and has played 24 NHL games not sure that is a player we have seen capable of playing 20+ mins a night.

Jets need to add 2 Dmen this summer

Getting a bad feeling about this seasons Jets. Starting to remind me of the Leafs. Defence be damned

Hopefully the Jets have a read on Samberg by now - If he's giving an indication he doesn't want to play in Canada, then he could be a very valuable trading chip right now.

But hopefully that's not the case - and he's a Jet next season and beyond.

Very true, have to worry about the future. With Samberg, Heinola and Stanley on the way, the Jets "d" could be set very well, but not till next year. I'm not completely sold on Poolman, due to injuries and what not, but hopefully he fools me.

I'm thinking what the Jets need is a veteran d-man with a little bite, signed to a one-year contract (max. 2 years). Whether this comes by trade or UFA is the question. Stralman might fit the bill.

two things,
yes, Poolman nhl sample size is small but I'm sick of Maurice choosing a bad D to play cause "he's familiar" with that bad D and prfers that over an unknown who may be actually be better.
and yes, i can see us signing two depth D but only 1 year deals for both.

There has been lots of talk through the media & on here about Laine & Connor (or at least 1 of them) taking a bridge deal. From a Jets perspective this would be a good thing because of the goal production of both players (tough to maintain), but when looking at it from the player perspective it really makes no sense. It doesn’t benefit either player to be in a ‘prove it’ situation, as they already have proven that they can score & salaries are dictated by goals, not defensive play or perceived effort. All of the other young players in the league that are scoring at a similar rate are cashing in with big contracts, so why do we think these 2 guys would be taking a massive discount or take their chances with a bridge deal?

Maybe wishful thinking?

Pete, glad to see you have a better understanding of the Jets reality in terms of the Cap situation.

The defensive hole will likely have to be filled by trade. I expect Vesalainen & Appleton to fill 2 of the FW spots.

Seems to be. No agent in their right mind would let them take a bridge deal. A hold-out is a definite possibility or my preference would be to trade Connor.

I would much rather the Jets play Niku, Poolman and Stanley than Kulikov and any one of the collection of has-been, never-was and re-treads that they could sign as an UFA. This would break Maurices heart and make him have to develop a real defensive system. I hope they aren't thinking of trading Roslovic for any defense help unless its part of a package that gets them a true #2 d-man.

I'm not in favor of an Ehlers deal but if it was part of a deal that brought back Aho, I'm all good

I am looking forward to the Jets doing nothing! They never do anything and most likely we are bringing the team we have right now into next season. Chevelsummeroff, is most likely at Grand Beach today.

There's talk of Philly dealing one of their current d - don't know who we might give up, but one of Sanheim, Provorov or Hagg would look good in Wpg.

But "no" to any Ehlers deal!

I agree Ross, only way I would be okay with Ehlers leaving is if it directly or as part of a package brought back a legitimate Centre. Aho would be an absolutely perfect fit.

Let me re-phrase this - no Ehlers deal unless we're talking Aho.

If I am a player, I would prefer to sign short term especially if I believe in myself. It also takes me closer to UFA status.

To CAR: Nikolai Ehlers, Adam Lowry, 2020 first round pick

To WPG: Sabastian Aho

Ultimate, as a player short term yes but bridge no. Players are still paid extremely well on short term deals (3-5yrs) & yes it brings them closer to UFA status. They are not paid nearly as well on a bridge. Also, a team building for contention can’t let that happen. Championship teams need to lock players up long term so that those contracts are actually reasonable & valuable toward the end. But, you can’t miss on that.

In reality, this team is not looking like contender in any way this year, so a bridge is pointless in saving salary for a non-contending year.

Typical Chevy moves today will be doing nothing & announcing a re-signing. I’m guessing Pionk &/or Beaulieu.
