Can you analyze the Myers contract and where you see him actually being in terms of value and position? |

Antecedent willingness is merely a predisposition to favour a particular outcome.
Clearly the animus towards Ceci still remains deeply embedded below the conscious level of some Sens fans. This force is something akin to animal spirits. It has power and energy and it has a real need to assert itself.
Trading Ceci does not mitigate the energy of the animus. Indeed, if anything, many of the fans who hated on Ceci are emotionally frustrated that he has been promoted upwards and been rewarded with a better team situation. They are not happy that by merely moving sideways he is offered this new paradigm where he may succeed and prove everyone wrong. They will not admit to it but they desperately are hoping he fails. They are frustrated that the Ceci story did not end with the finality of the haters being able to drive a stake through his heart.
So, now, we see the beginning of a new but entirely predictable dissonance. It is merely the transference of the hostile spirits towards new objects.
Unfortunately, that object is likely Zaitsev.
I hope I am wrong. |

Worst contract: Tyler Myers. Wowzers.
2nd worst: Kevin Hayes. I don't even know who this guy is. $7 million for a guy who has cracked the 20 goal mark once? For 7 years? |

The funniest part was the Flyers fan laughing about the Matthews contract yesterday.

I agree that they should spend the extra dollars in a trade for something like Clarkson's contract which would earn the Sens some great futures, but spending isn't the only option.
There are contracts out there that have high AAVs but very little actual dollars paid in the later part of bad contracts...which would please EM.
We've seen some GMs get creative to improve their team...time for Dorion to do the same! |

Any commentary on the upcoming season has to be taken with a grain of salt. This season and next season are write offs, but you can’t say that. You have to hype up even the most mediocre of players. I could honestly care less what the DJ has to say about any player on the roster who is essentially a place holder while prospects develop over the years.
As for not being able to get Marlau type trades, while not shocking and a bit frustrating, it should also should not be overanalyzed. While it’s nice to have all the picks in the world, at some point, you have to worry about quality over quantity. We already have quite the collection of picks and that will likely grow over the next two years. Nabbing another low 1st or 2nd rounder for a washed-up player isn’t the end of the world. However, it is indeed another reflection how ownership creates multiple hurdles that no other NHL franchise has to deal with.
Have to wonder how much more Gary Bettman can take with Eugene at the helm. Hell, how much universal hate Eugene can withstand?

The only bad part of the Matthews contract is the term. That much AAV and not buying a single UFA year is rough. The actual AAV is on par for how contracts are being signed right now, but that term (or lack there of) is gonna hurt |

Term is perfect for the player. Why not try to cash in when you can? |

I think what often gets overlooked with Hainsey is how much better Morgan Rielly got in the years he was a Leaf. I get it, Hainsey isn't the best player now, but I do get the impression he helped evolve Rielly into one of the better defensemen in the league.
If that's why the Sens grabbed him, and if he's going to have a similar, positive influence on Chabot, it's worth it for the season. |

It's the new reality.
Teams are starting to shy away from giving the monster contracts to guys turning 27 (please note: I said starting).
Simple fact is in the new NHL, guys are probably more productive from ages 22-27 than 27-35.
So why wait to demand the big bucks?
Fans don't like it.
GMs don't like it.
But at the end of the day, a player has to look out for himself. A career is very, very short - grab all the money while you can. |

Not to mention how long/expensive/time consuming the ramping up to said career is.

I have seen other reports of the positive impact hat Haisey had on Reilly's game. Methot was really strong playing with Karlsson and I thought it was a huge mistake to let him walk as part of the expansion draft.
The signing of Hainsey for one year at $3.5m is pretty transparent. If Chabot has another strong season he is going to be looking for $70m over 8 years on his next contract.
Hainsey is all about a very young D and, especially, about moving Chabot to the next level. |

I kind of hope so.
Nothing is going to put more pressure on Melnyk than the impending negotiation with Chabot. I assume Melnyk does not have the cash to pay him. We assume other teams will present bonus laden offer sheets trying to exploit Melnyk's vulnerability.
This should be a piece of cake for any owner with a good balance sheet. And, this is the problem. Melnyk will not be able to pay or finance a Chabot contract.
So, the flim flam he spews around rebuild will be torched just like all his previous other scams. The guy cannot afford to support the team and, far more important, he cannot afford to sell the team.
Bettman is going to have to intervene.
The impasse cannot be resolved as long as Melnyk remains in control.

So far, Melnyk has been ok resigning RFAs. The moment he starts struggling / unwilling to sign guys coming out of ELC’s, there is a new disaster that cannot be overcome. There were glimpses of this with Zibanejad although Brassard was an ok place filler for a couple of seasons.
If you cannot sign your top prospects such as Chabot, Tkchuck, etc in a rebuild, there is no hope for success. Thank goodness for the cap floor though.

Methot played just 45GP over the past 2 seasons, put up all of 3 points, made $9.8M, and is now pondering retirement. So I'm not sure that hindsight would really agree with your assessment of that decision. Worse yet, had they protected 4 defencemen as some suggested they should have, it would have left one of Brassard or Dzingel unprotected and cost them a surprisingly good trade return.
That said, there is certainly irony in the fact that the 2nd round pick acquired from Vegas in the Stone trade was the same pick that Dallas gave up for Methot.
