To this point I dont see much of a deviation from that Hexy plan with the exception of Hart possibly being up sooner than was expected. - opeth_pa
So you think Hextall would've bought out a player and taken on a future cap liability so he could have his preferred player as the 9th defenseman on the depth chart? I also seriously doubt that Hextall would have the team up against the cap this season. Those are significant distinctions. |

Sure, too true. That’s if you see those items as significant. May I humbly suggest that the Braun, Hayes and Pitlick additions probably wouldn’t have been the same. But of course, many don’t see those as moving the needle so it’s all perspective.

At the 50th Anniversary game-- in which Clarke, Barber, Leach, Lindros, LeClair, Gagne, Briere, Kerr, Poulin, Propp, Howe, Desjardins, the Watson brothers were all playing and most of the still-living members of the inaugural 1967-68 team were on hand along with other older Alumni who can't play anymore-- the current Flyers team was out of town. Nonetheless, Hexy instructed that the main locker room remain closed to the very people whose.photos adorn the room. The Alumni got dressed in a side room.
That created bad feelings and those snowballed with other policies limiting their access in both Voorhees and Wells Fargo Center.
I know for 100% fact that Hexy never intended to make the Alumni feel shoved aside and disregarded by one of their own. But it had that effect. - bmeltzer
Thanks for sharing these details. I think Hextall mentioned in his final press conference he wish he had handled that differently. |

Thanks for everything, Homer. A well deserved retirement.
And (frank) the miserable bumholes on here who can't look past hockey stuff, and have their self worth wrapped up in every little thing the team does. |

Maybe he wouldnt have done that.. Maybe he would have waited a year or two to have them up against the cap.
Just like I dont think he would have had Hart up as soon as he did.
It's sort of a moot point..Some people were happy with the 3-5 year winning the cup game in the off season and not much else approach for going on a decade.. some people are willing to give someone else just as much as a chance to do a good job. |

Some words about Homer I posted on twitter:
I’ve been a Flyers fan for the entirety of Paul Holmgren’s career as a player, coach, GM and team executive. I remember Fred Shero saying that he knew Homer belonged the first time he saw him play and he was right. He had all of the qualities of a 70’s era Flyer at 6-3, 210 lbs, while using all of that size to his advantage. Paul was a physical force who could score, peaking during the Flyers ‘80 Cup run with 30 goals and 65 points. He stayed as an active player with the team until 1984.
Beyond that, he took on all of the heavyweights during the peak NHL fighting era assuming the mantle of Dave Schultz to a great degree. That was no small task considering he had an eye injury his first season in the AHL, which nearly ended in tragedy due to complications. As a result he wore a face shield for a brief period, but it never deterred his physical play.
It’s unbelievable in these times to imagine someone starting as a player in 1976 and spending all but 6 or 7 of the last 43 years as part of the Flyers organization, but that’s what Holmgren accomplished.
Obviously the most lasting legacy of Paul Holmgren will be his tenure as GM, as he took over for Bob Clarke in 2006. He seemed to have a firm grasp of the concepts behind being an executive in the cap era and articulated them well when prompted. How he took the last place ‘07 squad and engineered a rebuild that culminated in the Flyers making it to the conference finals in ‘08, is probably his crowning achievement. A close second would be his hiring of Peter Laviolette during the 2010 season that ended up with a Cup final appearance.
I was a harsh critic of Paul during his latter years, as I felt he had lost his way and was too easily swayed by the always impatient Ed Snider, but there is no reason to rehash that today. What’s most important to remember is the entire record, which puts him in the pantheon of Flyers in the organization’s 52 year history.

I wish Holmgren all the best in his new chapter in life. Thanks for the honesty and dedication to the team he clearly loves-the Flyers.
He strikes me as the 70 1/2 type who grumble about pulling retirement funds and never really stops working. Those are some of the best though. Happy to sit across the table from one of those...ask about the grandkids and future plans. The good guys.

I read that the Jackets are going to count on their prospects, if that is true, I agree they are in trouble.
Agree on Pens, I pause because everytime I think they are in deep shxt they pull a rabbit out of the hat. With all the bad moves, not sure how they will still be a top end team - wcorvette
Yeah pens are (frank)ed. annoying too because Crosby and Mallon could still keep them in the mix with even close to a modicum of competency around them. |

This surprises me even more. It seems spiteful and I don't understand how Hexy
wouldn't realize it would have that effect. Was he just clueless or in a bubble?
Its very surprising considering the family culture that Ed Snider tried to cultivate with the organIzation. |

The intent wasn't spite. It was a no-exceptions belief that the room belongs to the current team, and only to them. In hindsight, Ron realized he should have made an exception in that one special case. |

Love ya, Bill.
I've always liked the Flyers family atmosphere. Love the alumni group. Have met a lot of them. Great people. Homer always tried to improve the team and go for it. Always did his best. Made some good moves and bad.
Thanks for dedicating your career to "our" team. |

ill assume from this:

Too bad he did absolutely jack sh!t for the flyers on ice performance.
- Fakepartofme
Yeah, took over the team as GM during their worst season in franchise history, and by the next year had them back in the Eastern Conference Final. Two years later, had them in the Stanley Cup Final (a place, need I remind you, where the Leafs haven't been since 1967).

I'm perfectly willing to give Fletcher a chance and I've stated that numerous times. That's not really the discussion though. The discussion is about if there have been differences in approaches.

I agree with Hextall on that. If the Alumni had an issue with then that's on them. I think it's sad if that is part of the reason why they fired him.
