Great write up, his run in the big seat was a real roller coaster. I still think about that 2010 run a lot, what a ride. |

Amazing article. Unique and candid insight as only you can deliver. Thank you so much for your dedicated writing and perspective. Without it, I would only truly understand a tiny sliver about this franchise, it’s organizational and hockey decisions. |

Bill thanks for all your work. Homer basically gave most of his life to the Flyers. In every capacity. Thanks for your dedication. Classic Flyer. |

100% correct, he was underrated for what he did here. The whining part of the fan base make it seem like everything he did failed. |

Great write up Bill. Homer as a GM was about average in a cap environment however he bleeds orange and black. It’d be nice to see a flyer player from the 90’s or 2000’s in the front office on track to pass the torch to so to speak to carry on the team’s legacy and best practices going forward |

Great piece Bill, thanks.
I loved Homer as a player, not so much as HC, and was, overall, mostly pleased with his tenure as GM. I’ve always put the blame for the Bryz fiasco on Snider too. My only real gripe with Paul as GM was not realizing that the window closed with Prongers injury and not going into rebuild mode following the 2012 playoffs. |

My fondest memory of Paul Holmgren was 79-80
He had a 30g + 35 A season, 267 pim, +35
10g+ 10a in their run to the finals
He was the first American Born player ever to have a finals hat trick,in those finals.
I was at that game, he had horribly injured his leg in a previous game and they put him together with duct tape, bailing wire, spit , athletic tape, pain numbed his leg, and whatever they did to get him out there
He was not to be denied, playing on one leg, he had a hat trick and then was allegedly pale as a ghost post game.. |

A really fair and kind tribute to a man whose contributions to the game are often overlooked. I always remember when Homer took over from Clarke. I remember that there was never any doubt, any sign of uncertainty. He simply did what he thought would make the team better. IMHO he got out of sync with what kind of players were needed to play Lavy's system, but that happens all over the NHL when GM's are trying to improve the team. It will be interesting to see how the tenor around the team changes now. |

Awesome read Bill. Homer always has/had the Flyers best interests at heart, sometimes it just didn’t work out for the best, sometimes it did. |

Kudos to Holmgren for his great hockey career and his dedication to the Flyers organization. He earned the right to step back and to devote himself more to his family life. Thanks Paul. |

There were a few situations (such as the handling of Simon Gagne's departures both in the summer of 2010 and 2013) where I think Homer uncharacteristically came up a bit short on the interpersonal level. - bmeltzer

2 years for Dzingel with Carolina. 3.4 million per. Drastic overpay for a guy who only scored 26 goals last year. |

It feels like this team is moving step by step from what made this organization special. Without getting into the specifics just some decisions that were made for publicity sake and a shift from being a family to more of a business. I miss what Mr. Snider brought.
I come to this realization as I leave in 2 weeks to move to Florida. For the first time I ask myself should I stay a “hardcore” fan? Or should I adopt the local team as a secondary team. I’ll always root for the Flyers.
I think if this team was still the family it was 10-15 years ago, and since it’s founding, then there would be no question. But now it’s just a team run by a corporation. A team with no connections to beating the Soviets. A team that is ashamed of the bullies title. And a team built by a man that did what was right, even if it wasn’t what was best for his team or himself, but that sentiment hasn’t been passed on.
I have some hard thinking to do between now and October. |

If anyone truly is a fan of the team at heart, then it's an easy decision to make. If you have to think about it well then maybe you weren't as committed as you thought.

Not true. Just because I don’t have blind loyalty? The team has changed. If what made me love them has changed then why should I be as dedicated?
I will always be a fan. I just don’t know if I will continue to leave and breath flyers hockey. Maybe Bills blog and the occasional nationally televised games will be my limits. I don’t know. |

It's not about blind loyalty. You can be critical of the team while still remaining a fan. There is nothing the Flyers as a team can do, short of becoming a drug running front of some other bizarre action that could stop me from being a Flyers fan. It's in my blood and my DNA. Until death.
