Seems like a good move, he can play up and down the lineup and gets a lot of net front goals. Not bad defensively, all for a guy who was a healthy scratch/passed wiavers and 1.3 extra mil. seems like a slam dunk. |

With this deal the Senators only pay $48-$49M in player salaries this year due to paid bonuses for Brown, Anisimov and Zaitsev plus the LTIR savings of 80% on Gaborik and MacArthur.
I hope that Melnyk sells the team this year as every move is to save a buck. It's hard to imagine Chabot or Tkachuk signing a 6+ year contract with this guy as owner. We are very vulnerable to offer sheets going forward.
I'm happy that Zack Smith gets to move on. I always liked the guy... |

Smith had been more of a winger than a centre in recent years. He would have certainly slotted in to the bottom 6 this season. Contributions there, and on the PK, can be replaced internally. I'm thinking Formenton plays the role of "energy" guy in the bottom 6. Anisimov takes Smith's PK minutes. As far as grit is concerned, I seem to recall Dzingel fighting as often as Smith last year, so the loss of Smith may be overstated as it relates to "toughness". Also, recently drafted overager Mark Kastelic projects as a rough and tumble forward who has played centre, so there's even another long term, in house, replacement for Smitty's role.
On the whole, it's a trade of one overpaid forward for another. Though I'm happy to see Dorion taking action, and I wish all the best to both Zack and Artem with their new teams. |

I did like Smith. Too bad he left. |

We've been trying to get rid of AA. Thank you for saving us $1.3M on cap as that was main reason we made the deal. |

ya, Chabot is gone next year and Tkachuk 1 year later if Melnyk is still owner, they will want Aho type contracts. |

I actually like this move for us. Somewhat of a lateral move, but it shakes things up a bit.
Next are Pageau and Anderson. Then we will have completed our objective of shipping out literally every player (excluding Ryan's immovable contract) on the team in just a 3 year period. That's impressive! |
