Mike, Leafs fans have been saying offer sheets don't work for nigh on 3 years now. We know.

It's the 30 other NHL fanbases that don't quite seem to be picking up what we've been putting down.

They are pretty silly. The next CBA should introduce a max length for the second contract. I find myself caring more about the business side of the game rather than the game itself now, which isn't really ideal for a fan.

Yes. It's very Leafy that this change happened the moment the Leafs decided to actually do a rebuild for the 1st time in my lifetime.

Marner will get signed the first week of training camp to a 3 year deal $9.5M with almost all of it being signing bonus. This gets him to the new CBA but still an RFA.

Matthews and Marleau out on their scooters, that's adorable. I give AM credit for not being conservative in his fashion choices, but I think he could use an editor sometimes.

This seems realistic. At least he'll be signed. Then Dubas will have to go through the same crap again in 2022. Fun times.

Honestly, something like this might happen. Maybe 10 instead of 9.5, but in that vein.

Matthews should shave his head. The male pattern baldness is creeping in. Go full Messier.

I'd like to see max 5 year contracts. Too many players get these 6-8 year deals and then mail it in. Find the right balance between being hungry or being complacent. Have the security but eliminate the retirement contract.

Another max three year after the ELC. Gives the drafting team one extra shot before UFA status to secure a long term deal. Also I really would like to see a cap credit for players a team drafted, but that is probably a pipe dream.

Also give teams some cap relief if they're signing their own players.

There needs to be some kind of a "Larry Bird rule" put into place. Teams shouldn't be punished for good drafting. Successful teams shouldn't be forced to gut their roster because of a salary cap. I still don't see how the Salary cap has helped the NHL. Or the salary floor even.

Then again if there were no Cap the Red Wings would be spending $100 million a year on players and with no floor the Sens would be spending $23.

Agreed. Teams shouldn't be held hostage by their own RFAs.

Something has to change in the next CBA regarding offer sheets. We're all sick of Dreger and Kypreos literally making a living talking about them. Either lower the compensation for signing RFAs or just eliminate it completely. The salary cap has made hockey fans wannabe accountants and it's taken away from talking about the actual game on the ice.

Sad but true. All we ever talk about anymore are cap hits and cap space .

Luxury tax: Toronto floats the majority of the league, might as well make it official.

a couple things I'd change about the cap, here are some ideas.

1: Every team gets to assign one player on their roster a "marquee" status, and he doesn't count against the cap.

2: I do like the suggestions of players drafted by the team gets discounted towards the cap, but what are we talking 10%? The only thing that would happen here though, is they would command more money. Players and their agents now ask for a percentage of the cap instead of a certain amount of dollars. So, if Marner wants 11.5, if he and his agent know that 10% doesn't count against Toronto's cap, he'll just ask for 10% more money, and it would just negate the whole thing, so actually, I don't like this suggestion anymore.

3: Let's just go with a luxury tax system. Let the rich teams spend like crazy, pay a luxury tax, and that money goes to the poor teams.

I can recall back in 04/05 the NHLPA willing to have a $46 million cap with a luxury tax. I think this would've been better than the eventual $39 million hard cap. I can also recall Kevin Lowe whining about the Red Wings spending $83 million saying his Oilers couldn't compete. But then the cap came and he spent money like a drunken sailor. 😂

Good post. I'd also like to see a limit on how much GMs can extend their own players for. We now see teams locking up their own players to long term deals and tripling their salaries when they haven't proven enough to deserve it. It drives salaries up too fast.

Go with max 5 year deals with a limit how much you can extend your own player coming off his entry level deal. All we see now are guys like Nylander getting their big deal and fans saying he doesn't deserve it.

But then fast forward a year and it's suddenly a great value contract. Teams and fans are always quick to justify their own players contracts. I like teams paying a good player for what he will do. Moreso than what he's done.

But there needs to be a balance there. Paying your dues seems to be gone now. It's like that quote from "Goodfellas." "I scored 30 goals F you pay me. I'm your best player and I'm 21 F you pay me. This player got 6 Mil and I'm better F you pay me."
