Tyler Cameron: Camping Conclusion, Convention and Summer Thoughts The Blackhawks 2019 developmental camp has concluded and there is a lot to be optimistic about.

I have more camp conclusions and personal opinions now that it's all said and done.

Tyler, I've been to the convention 3 times. We have stayed in the hotel at one of them, but the extra expense wasn't really worth it. The sessions are very entertaining, informative, and can be funny.

As for stories, I have 2. I went in 2011 and stood in line for 5 hours to see the cup. The cup was being displayed in one of the rooms. After 3+ hours of standing in line, we were 2 people away from getting in the room. They closed the doors because they wanted to empty out the room due to the cup being needed at one of the sessions. Waited another 90 minutes or so for the room to empty and the cup to leave and come back. When it came back, they opened the doors, and we walked to the front of the room. We got to see Phil take the cup out of the case and put it on a table. Then, all the special needs fans got a few moments with their families to take pictures with the cup. Meanwhile, we were 8 feet away from it for about 10 minutes. That was almost more special than when we got our turn for a picture.

The other moment was when we were able to get one of the tickets for the meet and greet with coach Q. She got up there and couldn't say anything. She was like a 5-year old seeing Santa. That was fantastic.

Nylander seems to be as advertised. Sometimes, he's all in. Too bad that's less than 50% of the time. Hopefully he shows up in camp. History suggests he will for the most part.

On a positive note, if strome and cat are lighting it up hawks will probably be in a good spot.

I've said this (observation/analysis) below previously but i mention again as to reinforce some promising news and because of the timeliness.

This is the best set of prospects both quantity and quality ever in the pipeline. While there may only be two or a few core players arising from the ranks, there is a logjam of prospects to compete for bottom line roles. Some of those prospects are probably talented enough to deserve some consideration for a greater offensive role. Many of them have a particular strength.or calling card which could make them.stand outs in their role.

Altogether the prospects should produce an enrire set of dmen and the forwards not only should outperform the opponent; moreover, we can roll four lines. Likely four lines not merely grinders but with as much or more ability and good skating compared to their ooponents.

You'/ve read scouting reports on the prospects although a couple haven't attended at least the just concluded camp. That would be Barrett and Soderlund. Both could provide value and perhaps exceptional value if their game turns out to be what is merely conjecture at this time.

Barrett may prove talented enough to play on a second line. But he has a mouth on him and could be a real agitator.

Soderlund has outstanding speed and is a persistent checker..His scoring or offensive contribution may ultimately develop into something more than Kruger was for us.

I won"t dive into a review of the defensrnen. But i am curious if Galvas could become a really solid underated type and whether Tuulola might prove to become a late bloomer whom is solid in all phases of the game.

Tuulola is maybe in a numbers gsme behind heralded prospects here. Might he suddenly pop up on an expansion roster. AEL_FOX you so far see him as minor league material. But give him e regular turn and peg him an underdog. He could gain some confidance and.improve just by getting the full.opportunity. Or maybe he really is just AHL calibre.

I sure would like to see the Hawks sign one of Strome or Cat now. Sort of hedge the bet. If they have a great year this year, it's gonna be tandem accomplishments and big bucks. Take some chips off the table of that bet, Stan, by picking and signing one.

Stan left a nice cushion to sign both players, i hope he's trying to get a Gus kind of 2 Yr contract with Pelini. Gus if he does well will end up being a free agent since we will have no starting goalies signed.

Love the analysis Tyler.

While, I too was disappointed not to see more effort put forward by Nylander, can't say I am too surprised considering all the reports thus far.

Was really hoping he showed enough to put with Kane and Toews on Line 1....and in turn making the next 2 lines fall together much better.

But, such a small sample...much more to come before October Game 1. Maybe he will still show more effort as we get closer.

My biggest excitement comes from what MAY lie down the road as far as our defense goes. 2-3 years ago, we had squat...less than squat...as far as internal D-men possibilities. Now, it is hard not to picture 3-4 of these young guys panning out to make up half or more of our future defense.

Watching 2-3 of them grow in Rockford this year will be interesting. And having them grow together may even help their transition to the BIG club, whether this year or next.

We even have some variance on skill sets as we have a couple offensive guys, like Boqvist....some 2-way guys like Mitchell and maybe a bigger net presense stud like Vlasic. Just hope they all keep progressing, maturing, and we are not too far from have a few of them making a mark in the NHL.

I’d like to see ADB extended before the next offseason. He’s earned his contract. Strome can wait. Let’s see him for a full season under the new regime first. I’m not as high on him as most here.

For me, D-cat IS the real deal. I would ink him as soon as possible. Strome, I would like to see him do it again. I hope he remembers how close he was to washing out as a "Dud" prior to coming here. He is in a position to thrive along-side D-cat....so maybe he doesn't play hardball on the $$$ and term of his contract. I am not saying cheap out on him, but he may never find a landing spot better than where he is now. So, maybe he smart enough to see that and sign a friendly deal that satisfies both sides.
At their ages...if we could sign them up for a while...and the flood of good youg "D" coming up behind them....we should be in a great position to be VERY competitive the next 8-10 years. We have some very nice under 25 talent on this team. Just keep growing so when the Toews, Keith, Seabrooks come off the roster (and all that Cap space) we will be EXTREMELY well positioned to add a couple of SIGNIFICANT helpers to this young group and be CUP contenders again!

On Perlini, if that's the kind of output you get in a contract year from him, good riddance. We should not be compensating for 1 week of output.

How do you figure? Capfriendly has us at $62M next year with only 13 players, and no goalies. If we sign ADB and Strome from less than $13 combined, I'll count that as a win. Lehner(?) Will be $7M more. That only leaves the increase in the cap. Some players may hit their bonuses, which could put us over this year's cap depending on in season trades, so we may have to use that against next year's cap. Plus we would still need 2 dmen, a backup goalie, and 3 to 4 forwards.
Next summer, I see Bowman being busier than this summer.

It will be interesting to see if high motor, chippy players like Caggiula, Shaw, Smith, Carpenter, Quenneville, and maybe even Hagel and Dach have an influence with “sometimes drifters” like Saad, Perlini, and Nylander. Hopefully the energy, physicality, grit, sand paper is contagious.

Montreal has 12 (yes 12) draft picks for 2020. Flip him for a pick or two if he won’t take a one year prove it deal. Still only 23. He’d be doing himself a favor by having another contract year to showcase himself.

I think all of the chippy, high motor guys are gonna give the new look PK unit a lot of practice. Hopefully they are dramatically better than last year, or it’s gonna be a long year.

Tyler, you hit the nail on the head with "too cool for school". Nylander seems to have an entitled attitude. Hopefully I'm wrong or he grows out of it.

I'm hoping it is that he had taken some time off, wasn't planning on going to Buffalo's camp, and was not 100% percent ready. Hopefully, but the time training camp opens, he'll be in game shape and earn a spot.

Perlini for Caufield?

Can they include Gaudette (Sikura’s former ncaa linemate) and we’ll toss in Gilbert who’s future is toast here anyway?

I think Stan signs them both at the same time. Contract amounts will certainly differ and length could as well. I'd want to sign DeBrincat for the max term of 8 years. Strome should sign for 5 or 6 years.

I'm not too worried about losing either guy. I know the Hawks have lost some quality guys over the years but the team is no longer in cap hell and they've factored in re-signing #12 and #17 in all the decisions they've made. Plus, they have several contracts without any NTC/NMC that can me moved if needed. Also, I doubt the Hawks will spend $11 million on goaltending next season.

You better believe it!

The Athletic did a 'top 50 NHL drafted' prospects list. Here are some notable mentions:

#1 - Jack Hughes
#2 - Kaapo Kakko
#3 - Quinn Hughes
#6 - Alex Turcotte
#8 - Bowen Byram
#9 - Dylan Cozens
#14 - Adam Boqvist
#18 - Kirby Dach
#25 - Cole Caufield
#26 - Henri Jokiharju

Laz goes in for a session with Kane's agility trainer. Great look behind-the-scenes. Couple of quotes:

Talk to him long enough, and you’ll believe Kane can be at the top of his game not only well into his 30s, but into his 40s and beyond. He’s certain that Kane will only get better, aging curves be damned. A career-high 110 points in a career-high 22:29 per night (behind only Edmonton’s Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl among NHL forwards) is pretty strong evidence that Mack might be on to something.

Kane certainly believes in him. He’s with Mack in the gym six or seven days a week, from 6:30 a.m. till about noon, typically burning about 1,700 calories.

......

Mack doesn’t recruit athletes, and he doesn’t ask his clients to recruit for him. All of his clients reached out to him, not the other way around.

So you won’t see him cajoling Kane to get Brent Seabrook into his gym, though he firmly believes he could help him skate faster and more efficiently.

You won’t see him stalking the halls at the Blackhawks’ practice facility to lure Jonathan Toews, though he’s sure he could help improve the captain’s explosiveness and his quickness.

This is what many Buffalo fans said about Nylander his entire time here. It was the same exact case. Showed up and trying appeared to not be In his vocab. All of the sudden he has mysterious injuries and is not participating.

He has all this talent, but at times it appears he has a 10 cent head. He did not want to put in the work at times it seemed.

He expected to be in the NHL. Did not want to play in the minors to condition and get better.

He was labeled a floater.

Hopefully the Chicago staff can slap the poop out of him and knock the entitlement out of him.
