3 first round exits in a row stings but at least they have a great roster for years to come and are making the playoffs (which doesn't make them so desperate).
I don't know if I'd say the most desperate. Maybe the fans for the cup, but team wise....I dunno...
OILERS I think. |

Leafs.
The answer to every question is Leafs.
Or Laffs, Laughs, Loafs, Make Beliefs, Maple Queefs, Make me Laughs.
But always the team from Toronto. |

I'd rather not make the playoffs and have the lottery pick than continue to lose in heartbreaking fashion in the first round every year.
But, the league as a whole is better when Toronto's a good team. |

Not Buffalo apparently.... Sign Laine already!!!!
No one is going to go there via unrestricted free agency

You would?
For example you would rather be the oilers of the past decade then say the Red Wings of 20+ playoff seasons in a row? Entertainment value alone I would probably disagree. |

Big picture it’s the Leafs. How many years since they won the cup? In the short term it’s the Oilers. So many high draft picks and nothing to show for it. |

It's no fun to hate them when they're bad. The rivalries are much better when they're good. |

I agree that the Oilers are probably the most desperate team. With all the top picks come & gone, wasting the first few years of McDavid’s career, new GM & no real light at the end of the tunnel. But the blog said “top teams”. Habs seem desperate with that offer sheet but again...not really a top team. TB probs want to avenge last years finish but I don’t think they are a desperate team. So if we’re going with top teams then my pick would probs be the Leafs. They have such a talented roster & haven’t quite lived up to the expectation yet. Maybe not entirely desperate until the playoffs start but they need to get that playoff monkey off their back this year. I’ll throw Columbus in there too. They went all in last year as a top team & it didn’t pay off. Management must be in a bit of damage control right now & haven’t had a super great off season to speak of. |

Well.....
#1. The leafs. They have yet to even win 1 playoff round and are hyped to be "Elite".
#2. Islanders. They have signed many players in the latter half of their careers to long term contracts that look eerily similar the the red wings circa 2015. If they can't win now, their aged and expensive team will surely not win later.
#3. The rangers. They were terrible last year, lost Pionk, Hayes, Zuccerello, Kreider (likely to be traded) and are suddenly capped out after adding Panarin and Trouba. Overhauling a team in one off-season and spending so much is a risk.
Honerable mention to Tampa, who is a heavy favourite with Point, Vasilevskiy, and Sergachev all due to massive raises. |

52 years and counting...if the Leafs aren't already desperate, they darn well should be. This is coming from a 40 yr old Leafs fan. |

Depends on what you mean by desperate.
The Rangers are in cap hell and after lucking in to Kaako, signing Panarin and Trouba, they still arent good enough to be anything more than a bubble team.
Being a bubble team and in cap hell is not a good combo.
Leafs are in win now mode because soon enough they may be in cap hell depending on what Marner gets.
Both are high pressure, big market squads with fan bases that want it now.
Take your pick. |

Tampa had one of the best seasons in history and didn't win a single playoff game, they have the weightiest expectations.
Toronto is right up there. They are like the Capitals were for a long time, not able to break through in the playoffs, and the Bruins are to the Leafs what Pittsburgh was to Washington.
I feel a Tampa versus Toronto series this year is poetically inevitable and will be classic. |

The Leafs for sure. Was looking into it and they haven't even won in the past 50+ years!
They are so close to the cap, but get bounced in the first round EVERY season. Add to that their best player (by far), Mitch Marner, is probably going to get offer sheeted and leave for 4 first round draft picks that will all be 28-31 because Marner makes any team an instant favorite to win. If he does somehow sign in Toronto, it will be a massive overpayment that will cripple the team and make it impossible for them to win.
Things are bad in Toronto, and I can't think of any team that is even close. |
