Imagine how great the team would fit under the cap without the Tanev signing.

The thing is we wouldn't want this roster to be status quo. I like the Tanev signing for many reasons. This will force our hand to trade Jacko even if it costs Rust.

JR has miscalculated a lot in recent years.

There is a good chance they trade Rust and JJ is still on the roster next season.

I personally think Rust is underappreciated. He's not a superstar, but he's a decent bottom-9/very good bottom-6 winger (preferably on the 3rd line). He's probably a bit overpaid, but they guy is able to play a smart, solid game and add some nice supplemental scoring.

Now, if you're basically trading Rust/JMFJ for Tanev and cap space, I'm not saying it's a bad move...I just don't think people on here value Rust as much as I do. Just my take.

I do. Hes better than Tanev. He's versatile and hard working with a scoring touch.

He’s also able to slide up the roster and not look out of place for small periods of time. I’ve come around to Rust. He was dogpoop his first season but since then he’s evolved into a solid middle six guy. Like you said, preferably in the third line.

A tale of two Nicks last season...some around here say we never got over losing Bonino...which I call nonsense...the only reason I even looked at these two today is because Bonino is right next to Bjugs in the drop down name menu and I wanted to see Bjugs....

He had kind of a rough go his first season with injuries and didn't really start gelling until later in the season and then took off.

I'd like it, unless I'm not seeing, if some of these stats can let you break things down by either the first and second half of the season, different quarters or even seeing their trends

Oh I like Rust..I'm just trying to be realistic. If we trade JJ we probably will lose Rust doing so (perhaps Simon?).

Simon is cheap, effective and they just traded Maatta for one of his fellow countrymen. I dont see him being moved.

They can have a Dominik sandwich line....

I'd rather keep Simon over Rust. Think outside of the box and the possibilities of players being traded attached to JJ, just like the Hunwick/Sheary situation.

I thought the same, but I have a feeling we will just be trading Rust. JJ seems like the most impossible contract to move at the moment.

Simon and JJ won’t give them enough cap relief IMO.

I honestly think that this was Rutherford's intention this summer....to trade JJ. I can't remember what reporter said this (I think it was Yohe), but JR believes he can trade any contract under 4mil. Seems to be a gross miscalculation as the summer moves along. With the escalation in costs for RFA's and not enough rebuilding clubs willing to take on 3.25mil for four more years. If JJ had only a year or two left, that might be palatable if you're offering a nice asset to LA or Anaheim. I know this team doesn't do buyouts, but that was the best route for dumping him if they're only concerned about the next 3 years.

JR miscalculated his ability to add centers a couple of years ago too.

- madmike71

How so?

First he went out and got Sheahan who played/ended up at 4C and replaced Cullen, Then he went out and got Brassard to play 3C

Now, Brass obviously didn't work out but he was also the big fish and JR went out and got him - not sure where you see a "miscalculation"

Nobody at the time didn't think that Brass/Sheahan was miles better than Bonino/Cullen

So did the Scuderi contract...I don't have much faith that hell get it done, but I cling to the memory of that deal as my last hope.

Yea, nobody expected Brass to be a pouty little female dog for his entire time here. What a (frank)ing bum he was.

Pouting was just a way to try to change the focus to his horrible play. He was pretty bad and didn't get better going to Florida or Colorado. So much for a new contract...
