How old does a defensemen need to be, how many years in the league before he is considered a vet by the people in here?
- MBFlyerfan

Well, first they need an undergraduate degree (preferably in the medical field) from between 3-5 years, followed by 4 years of veterinary school. So anywhere from 7-9 years.

A Vet is described as: a person who has had long experience in a particular field

I'd say it is more about how many years\seasons a player has been in the NHL rather than age. To me a Vet is a guy who has been in the league at least 10 years.

Tim Thomas is a perfect example. He broke into the league in his 30s yet he had no NHL experience so he is not considered at Veteran goalie

Definitely agree with the first and last parts. Minimum of 10 years seems too long though in my opinion.

Then please tell us what your definition is. Or just continue to say what other people think isn't right.

Haha after three seasons a guy is signing his first contract. A veteran not a years thing it's more of you know that guys a vet. Niskanen and Braun, we all consider them vets, if you have to question it, probably not.

10 years is more like a seasoned vet, even that's on the high end

If he's signing his first contract after 3 NHL seasons that would mean he spent no time in the AHL though, so I guess I would agree with that. And I'm not claiming I'm right by any means haha, just had that in my head. But years of experience definitely has something to do with it.

Yeah.
It sucked.
Between him and Pelle............damn.
I wonder if any other team suffered these types of setbacks. Since I follow only one team (Go ahead and guess.) for the last 39 years, I am ignorant of many of the horrors that afflict other franchises.

I remember Steve Chiasson for Carolina being killed in an auto accident the day after their playoff run ended on his way home from the post season party.

And the death of Thrasher Dan Snyder in the truck with Dany Heatley driving.

10 years is way too long to be considered a vet.

But this is a good discussion as the point of my original post was to try to figure out who is considered a vet and who isnt. How long should they be in the league to stop being considered young and inexperienced....

IMO Ghost is a vet (298 games). Provorov(246) is on the cusp due to experience.

I considered Gudas a vet.

Niskanen and Braun definitely vets.

I see 300 games as being my loose criteria of what a vet is. If you haven't figured it out by then.....

Not really a right or wrong here but I think if the question has to be asked i'd lean towards no.

EL deals are in fact negotiated like any other contract. They are also very much a contract.

I don't see how asking you to clarify what you meant there as being ridiculous.

Wow, 20 years since Tertyshny’s death. It’s interesting to wonder what kind of career he would have had. If I remember right, he was an under the radar prospect who had a nice, but not spectacular showing after his call up.

He played one season and had a solid rookie year. Didn't look like the next Mark Howe, but never looked like he didn't belong.

Sadly, the one play I remember him for most was a turnover late in a game where the Flyers were less than a minute away from a shutout. He turned it over, guy went in on a breakaway and the scored. The announcers said, "That's the kind of play that you make as a rookie, he'll learn as he gets older that you can't do that." Not saying that play epitomizes him, it just stands out in my mind.

Right, that was my recollection of his time. 2 goals and 10 points in 62 games was respectable for a rookie 5th rounder.
