I think this is going to be an interesting thing here this season. A whole lot of new faces really overall when you consider things and that is going to lead to a lot of them maybe finding their groove and stepping up. The new euro guys comin over that may well make the team too.

I don't think for two seconds Dubas is done here after peddling Sparks out. I still think Goat could well be moved too.

A lot of chances and opportunities here for guys to actually step up this year.

And first!

Kapanen was breaking out last season until Nylander came back and the lineup got screwed up. Whatever that did to his mojo, he wasn't the same after. Hoping he starts the year with Matthews, unless Nylander gets back to form and earns the spot.

Moore just caught Chara in his crumple zone, Ennis too. Was truly magnificent.

My explanation might be a little simple but I thought Kapanen's drop in production was mostly caused by not playing with Matthews anymore? So more quality of linemates vs his personal performance.

I do expect him to get career highs this season though. He could also slot in next to Tavares if Marner holds out.

Kappy was on fire until the concussion, I think he has a high ceiling. Every shift he opens something up, hopefully this year he stays healthy. If he has a good year maybe next year he can wear #88.

He's a very good skater, and creates room with his speed.

I think the biggest detractor in his game is that Kapanen is not a great passer nor is he particularly creative. Matthews would benefit with more of a passer who can also shoot - like Nylander _should_ be.

Interestingly, though, Matthews had a great deal of success with Kapanen although if you look at the GF/60, Kapanen was more effective away from Matthews. Probably because both players tend to be shoot-first players.

Kapanen isn't a tiny fella either. He definitely doesn't have the hands for slick passing and dangling but he's got a decent shot. What I'd like to see more from him is to take the puck deep into the o-zone or towards the net instead of stopping up along the wall and trying to make a pass on zone entries.

Improves depth?

Borgman would have stayed with the Marlies. Schmaltz has a chance in our top 6.

Nylander is elite at gaining the O Zone with possession and pulling up and finding an open guy (Matthews). I think you pair them together from the start and they'll figure it out again. Throw Johnsson on the other wing.

Kap is a little more one-dimensional. Its an unbelievable dimension but not really the best compliment to Matthews, he can drive an extremely high energy 3rd line.

Thanks Pat.

Kinda what I thought. Since he's a righty, there's a better shot for him because much less depth for us.

If Schmaltz works out, it's great.. We moved an AHL'er for an NHL'er... If he doesn't work out, meh..
