For an entire year all I heard was Marner, Matthews, Johnsson and Kapanen offersheets. I was pissed off the Toronto media spend countless hours on this nonsense during the season.

Darren Dreger is done because of his offersheet schtick

According to Don Waddell, Montreal's offer sheet only amounted to $5 million more than what Carolina was offering Aho over the first 5 years of the contract they last offered him prior to July 1, they just weren't budging off term.

So instead of paying $37 million in the first 5 years, they'll pay $42 and still get him for below market value, so....

Yeah. That's not a real offer sheet. There was no chance at all the Carolina wouldn't match.

It was a joke. Know idea why Bergevin bothered.

General consensus seems to be he got played by Aho's agent, but in an interview Waddell did say that Bergevin had initially tried trading for him and had threatened an offer sheet if the Canes wouldn't make a deal. Possible he decided he had to do it after Canes said no, but didn't want to actually give up that many draft picks?

Dunno. It was dumb.

You are correct bc any of those teams matching mesns that have to move roster players with zero leverage.

It almost felt like Carolina was doing them a favor and then later can repay the favor calling it revenge.

I believe one of two things happened, one is Bergevin was in cahoots with hurricane management to make sure Aho was signed to a ridiculously low deal or two, Habs deliberately low balled the offer knowing it would be matched. Then Habs could use the excuse of we tried when they had no intention of upgrading the roster.

Everyone thought this year would be the year of a lot of offersheets, but no one is close to Chabot's situation next July 1st. Melnyk will go bankrupt matching max signing bonuses. He's a much bigger realistic target than any RFA this year.

But the media won't even mention offersheets and Chabot because no one really cares.

this is too complicated. bergy is smart enough to pull this off.

the limp Richard offer sheet is much more up bergy's alley.

Big contracts to Chabot and Tkachuk could actually bankrupt the Sens, especially if attendance keeps slipping the way it has. They're already only paying like $47 million in actual dollars next season.

Sens going bankrupt? I thought the world needed more Canadian teams..lol
Last good offer sheet I remember was (I think) the canes trying to steal Federov from Detroit

Well their owner is more the reason than the city itself.

They need to lower the pick compensation for offer sheets. Picks are worth too much with how low the salary cap is. You have to build through the draft or end up overspending on UFAs and being mediocre team.

I agree about Chabot. He's a bigger target than anyone. Having the richest team supposedly losing everyone to offersheets was just sad clickbait this year. Teams that are broke can't afford those signing bonuses.
