It's silly to have them on the roster this season. They're redundant as best, and closer to hindrances - jcragcrumple
Whether we agree with it or not, I think next season was Botterill's target to really start to make big moves. He has set himself up nicely for that. |

Why wasn't his target this year? These are deals he has acquired which have become hindrances to the team, and subsequently made him play hardball with erod, ullmark and McCabe. He helped create the mess, so he gets the flack for them being on the team. That's how the gig works
"He's not GMTM" is not going to continue to be a good reason to employ him, if he cant show improvement |

Sure the Sabres have cap space, but they only have 8 players signed. (Includes Risto)
12 players with roughly 40 mil in cap.
3.3 per player.
Reinhart is getting 7 min
Montour is getting 5 min
10 players left to sign with 28 in space.
Still not a lot of room.

I'm not saying I like it, but everything he has done seems to point in that direction. I just can't write it off as a coincidence that every albatross of a contract save Okposo, whether inherited or obtained, comes off the books after this season. That, to me, says he had his sights on 2020-2021 for a while, now, and the Pegulas seemed to have signed off on that. |

Or one or both get traded for comparable players with better term/salary. Not that I believe it's a likely scenario, but he still has a lot of flexibility to do a lot of things next year.

"The one thing I think about is it’s time to start winning. That’s why we’re here," Pegula said during an interview with The Associated Press while sitting next to his wife and team president, Kim, a few hours before the start of the NHL draft in Vancouver.
"We have Ralph on board and some young players, leaders, Jack," he said, referring to newly hired coach Ralph Krueger and team captain Jack Eichel. "So it’s time to put it all together."

Within one calendar year he’s acquired
Skinner
Johansson
Vesey
Montour
Jokiharju
Miller
Sheary
Probably still a Ristolainen deal coming
I’m counting 3 potential top 4 D and three top 9 forwards
But keep pushing this narrative he’s sitting on his hands. It really holds up
We know, we know, he made the ROR trade and we should hold it against him forever |

he has a block of nine ufa's coming off the books next year and will be going into the season almost exclusively with the players he wants to move forward with...that's a lot of flexibility |

Sure, let's see if those moves work
I'm just not a believer in "he's allowed to be bad for one more year" |

And? What's he supposed to say? "I fully expect to be a bad team this season as well"?
This team should be better than it was last year organically with better coaching. Playoff caliber? Not necessarily, but unless this team plateaus or regresses, he's probably going to get next season make a team where playoffs aren't even a question. |

So 8 out of 9 are players he himself acquired or signed to new deals. I'm still not sure why we should be applauding him for taking one more year to clean up his own situation |

No one's applauding him for it. We all want this team to be good this season, but it doesn't take much to see that this season was never his primary target, whether we like it or not. |

point taken...but he never signed any of them to long-term contracts and obviously wasn't looking at them as long-term solutions

Again, if this team finishes bottom 5 like some of the projections have it.
What happens?
Botts gets a pass because it was never about this year?
Do we get to question whether this is the right fit? |

Long term? Probably not, but different markets pose different challenges when it comes to getting fan interest. They probably need to be a playoff team to stay relevant in that city. |

I said in the last thread that he is going to get next season unless the team plateaus or regresses. If they finish bottom five, they will have either plateaued or regressed. |
