If 3 years from now Girard has terribly regressed and Avs want to get rid of him, they can buy him out for only 800K per year on the cap.
So either way great deal, as it will be either a steal, just fine, or inconsequential. |

they won't have to...this will likely be a bargain...even an average/dependableish D-man makes $4-$5mil. His play last season was worth at least $4m |

5M is pretty standard for a 4D, and Girard is that now, with a higher ceiling. It is a good signing, and the NHL continues to get smaller and faster which plays into Girard's game. Yes, if you compare it to Butchers AAV, its not as good of a deal, but Butch's 3 years is the reason why, and I would have been happy with 7 yr 5M AAV for him as well. |
