Peter Tessier: If Shattenkirk bought out should the Jets look? Should Shattenkirk become available would he be an option for the Jets? Could he be an option?

Demanding a 6-year contract right after you've been bought out sounds like a pretty ballsy demand.

After his last couple seasons, I don't think anyone will give him a long term deal. He might have to take a one year, build up your value deal. Which is a risk, because he's looked horrible for almost three years.

"Evolving-Hockey.com that said the contract expectation for Shattenkirk could be something around 4.5 million but for term, like 6 years."

He can create whatever expectations he wants but don't confuse them with the reality of receiving offers. That said, I hope one of the other central division teams signs him to that contract aav, even for less term.

It may have been a desperation move from the Rangers cap wise, but they absolutely had the dead weight to drop.

He’s not the guy you remember with a spark of talent in St. Louis. He’s now a liability on both ends of the ice.

I hate all things Rangers, true, but I was a little nervous when they signed him. I thought he could be a problem.

Nope. They’ve been a bad defensive squad over the past few years, and he’s been part of that stink.

The Rangers have been trying like hell to fix this concern, and with their acquisitions, he would have become a 3rd pairing guy on a poor unit.

If you can pick him up for cheap as a filler, have at it. If you need a playmaker, look elsewhere.

Shattenkirk is a declining player who is a bust with the Rangers that gets way too much $ for what he brings. The Jets are better off to start the season with Pionk, Poolman, Niku, Beaulieu and even Stanley and Nogier, teamed with Buff and Morrissey than adding another Kulikov. Buy out Kulikov and give the draft and develop kids a chance to play.

Laine and Connor need deals and therefore assume 15 mill ear-marked for them as has been suggested here in the past.

Do you really think both those players will sign for 7.5 mill AV each ?? That seem pretty low to me ...

no way at 4.5m. save the cap space, maybe for use at the trade deadline.

Let someone else make the overpay on this.

What I do not get, is if anyone wanted him in the area of 5M, why not simply trade him and retain 1.65M????? New your would only be on the hook for to years at 1.65, as opposed to:
yr 1 - 1.45M
yr 2 - 6M
yr 3 - 1.45M
yr 4 - 1.45M

And now the Rangers will put smith in the Minors, and buy out Staal next season. What a mess, all so they could land two players for 20M. I still don't consider them a playoff team. Bad management.

Jets no way should touch Shatternink . Jets should look at Mark Stone who was just bought out by Calgary and since he is a Winnipeger might be willing to come here at a reasonable $.

I would be okay with Shattenkirk on the cheap if I thought he’d improve our team. He’s a better option than Neal Pionk and Dmitry Kulikov, but we all know him signing here means nothing for them, and popcorn for Niku and Poolman.

I’ll stick with what we have, and keep the obstacles in front of Sami and the Poolman to a minimum

ShattenKirk 💰💰💰= Kulikov 💰💰

I would much rather take my chances with Niklas Kronwall, Dan Girardi, Dion Phaneuf or Ben Lovejoy... better players as long as they come at a reasonable cost.

Kronwall is still decent in a shutdown role. Shatts is better in the offensive side. Just depends what you need. But NEVER mention lovejoy again. I am a huge devs fan, and he is the single worst player to ever dawn the jersey. Thanks for Nico and Hughes Lovejoy, but it is retirement time!

Jets would have to overpay for him to live in Winnipeg.

Literally all of those players are dramatically worse than Shattenkirk and Kulikov, while also being way past their prime

You mean like the leafs are doing with everyone to.
Taveras gets top dollar ( sorry, one team offered more, whoppi, all that means is two teams were willing to pay top dollar)
Mathews gets top dollar and walked to UFA status
Marner WILL probably get 10 mill on 2-3 year deal.
Willy gets 7

Show me where players took less to live in Toronto? No difference.

You know the Jets still play in Winnipeg, right? Free agents aren't moving to Winnipeg unless there are no other options.

Outside of this year due to salary cap constraints, how many players have left Winnipeg via free agency? The number is 1 and that was Frolik. If players did not want to be here, they would not be signing long term deals, see Wheeler, Little, Perreault, Kane, Bogosian, Pavelec, Enstrom, Byfuglien, etc... All those players had the option to sign up until they became unrestricted free agents to leave but none did.

Thank you for coming out!

True. Not many players want to play in Canada unless it is near their hometowns. I would argue that the exception would be to join a contender. I consider Winnipeg a contender. You can always leave in the summer and just focus on training and life in the rink through the winter.

Great point! Their season is so hectic with training and travel, they are rink rants. Ya it is nice to leave practice in shorts and a t-shirt, but at the end of the day, you only stay in the nhl if you train your arse off and live in the rink. Kelowna is becoming a small paradise for off season training.
