Name one playoff team in the history of the NHL that traded away a top-pairing defenceman at the trade deadline. Playoff GMs are always panicking at the deadline that they don't have 14 NHL ready defensemen ready to go for playoff depth.
Not only that but the teams looking to rent Brodie are also going to be playoff teams who aren't going to be giving up anything useful.
The only way Brodie gets traded at the deadline is if the season is a disaster and they're not a playoff team.

They are indeed rare, the only one I could find (of real significance) was when the LA Kings traded Rob Blake to Colorado. Rare, but circumstances can change things. In Blake's case, it was more the contract than the player in the end.
Agree that Brodie, unless the playoffs are off the table, is not dealt by the Flames at the deadline.
