"When you look at players like Nikita Gusev and Timo Meier going for 4M with low acquisition costs (in the case of Meier nothing) it can be a little frustrating to see 3.5M spent on who is likely a fourth line forward."

What has Gusev accomplished in the NHL that warrants him making $4.5 mil a year?

EDIT: Also, Timo Meier is making $6.0 mil a year, not $4.0.

It’s what he’s accomplished in the KHL that warrants him making 4.5m a year. The kid was a stud in the KHL, out scoring Panarin in his final season over there.

So that guarantees he will do well in North America? He only scored 17 goals last year.

Wow.... no Jack Johnson bashing... and I am pretty sure this is a very fair and reasonable evaluation of Tanev.

Only thing missing was the 'possibility' of line combos with him in the top 6.

But you gotta add 'no garuntees, just mathematically likely'

There’s of course risk involved, there’s risk involved in every draft pick, trade, signing, roster move, coach firing, etc. but I’d prefer the risk if Gusev at 4.5 over Tanev at 3.5 (if that’s what you’re comparing). Tanev is a 3rd/4th liner at best and those guys are a dime a dozen, Gusev has the potential to being Panarin.

I enjoy how people like to pretend the KHL is something totally different from hockey.

Here is ILYA KOVALCHUK stats that last two years in Russia:

GP G A PTS
53 31 32 63

60 32 46 78

How'd that work out for LA?

Agreed. Here is what Wilson should have included: "After creating the most expensive (and worst) 3rd pairing on defense, JR turns his attention to the 4th forward line."

I love players like Tanev, but he was totally unnecessary and his contract is absurd in length, money, and a M-NTC to top it off. I think there is a very real possibility that Tanev is a ~25 point player and not productive or good enough to warrant playing on the 3rd line, at least not on a Cup-worthy team.

Lol well it didn’t work out great because Kovy was 35 but he still managed to outscore Tanev in less games. Sick argument though.

But he still scored well at ages 33 and 34. That doesn't say much about the competition he was up against does it?

Kovalchuk (36) put up 34 points in 64 games .57/game, 1.99 Pts/60

Tanev (27) put up 29 in 80 games, .36/game, 1.55 Pts/60

If Gusev matches Kovalchuk production he'll put up 50 points, I'd rather have that for $4.5 than Tanev for $3.5.

And Gusev is more likely to produce like Dadonov than Kovy.

How? My point is the competition that Gusev played against is no where close to what he will play against now. So to just say "well he had 80+ points over there, he'll get that here." is nuts.

Definite overpay with Tanev. Even more so if Rusty gets traded as is most often suggested. GMJR hasn’t really helped the team these last two years. More mistakes than winners. The window keeps closing but nothing suggests the Pens can seriously contend.

I agree 100%, just saying even if he does what Kovaluchk does, most would agree it is significantly better than Tanev.
