They are in such a better position imo.
Since their franchise player is signed for 6M, no-one is saying rantanen should get 10+. Our franchise guy signed at a ridiculous 11.6 so now that's the comparable - BestRapperAlive
They lucked out on Nathan Mackinnon underachieving, contract-wise. If we were sitting around watching Matthews get under 60 points three years in a row after his rookie season, we wouldn't feel very fortunate regardless of his contract.
That's hockey. |

Wow, this all makes sense then...Sheesh you'd think being the highest paid winger would be enough considering he was drafted 4th and not 1st like McDavid.
hope this is just a game of chicken now. - mel_vin
I think the problem is the media tosses numbers around like empty beer bottles. They get a sniff of something but they don't put any context to it at all. Money vs. term ...UFA vs. RFA years. They're (frank)ing pigeons.
Marner believes that he will be one of the best players in hockey over the next decade. Leafs slot him in as something less than that. Okay, shorter term it is...
Leafs are trying to buy any UFA years they can and MM is trying to avoid that.
Somebody will blink once camp starts but worst case scenario is that both sides have arb rights next year - I think. Get a 1 year place sitter and next year let an arbitrator decide what he's worth. |

This is a crappy scene.
As a Wings fan, I don’t mind seeing it. That said, I have always respected the Buds and don’t get the hate other fans have for them and their fans...seems obsessive after a while.
Anyway, I like watching Marner play, but to turn down (reportedly) the amount of money he has is super greed man. I get the back and forth of: player should get theirs and owners are greedy, etc. But at the end of the day, that’s a boat ton o cash to play for your hometown team. Every 500K extra he asks for is less to go get another player to be a better overall team. It’s also been pointed out a lot, but if he gets traded to a crap market he will lose millions in off ice stuff. Might be the difference of what he’s arguing for.
Lastly, AM, JT he is not. That’s just on the Buds. I’d take a number of players (some who are/where RFA) over Marner. Everyone talks about how he pumped JT stats - in reality, JT has a career year by (roughly) 3pts. Marner jumped up 30 or so playing with JT, who has lifted a lot of mediocre players stats over his time on the Island. Seems like they both benefited from one another, but more so Marner. - Big23Questions
JT had an extra 10 goals playing with MM.
Marner was bound to improve upon last years, but playing with JT helped. As it should, or else why pay JT all that money.
He'll sign.

Hyman for Captain.
Best option by far.
Assistants are Rielly and Tavares.
Trade Nylander to fit in Marner's 8 x 11.16mln AAV contract under the cap - killing 2 birds with one stone.

Thats a very good point, so how much does he 'desserve' then ? - Xizord
realistically..since he is an RFA, lets say he signs for 6 years. I think 9 is fair
Id probably not be upset at 9.5
I predicted he would get just over 10.. |

To be fair, JT’s goals went up 10 over the previous year and 19 from the year before. Also Mitch received more ice time, and obviously playing with a true #1c helps a bit...shouldn’t be held against him. Other players who get paid played with good players too. JMO
Hopefully he signs for a reasonable price and we can stop talking about it.

I'm turning down $10mil X 8 years every single day of the week if I'm Marner because I am simply worth much much more than that.
5 years X $10.5 million is a fair deal on both sides. Maybe Marner gives us an extra year as a favor and goes for 6. - Njuice

Agreed.. The Hawks are a smart team.
Also, the Sabres are smart for their ability to make both O'Reilly and Ristolainen lose their passion for hockey.
You just don't hear about that anymore these days. Kudos to the Sabres and their management. - PatC80
Patrik Berglund forfeited $10MM+ just so he didn't have to play for the sabres anymore. |

I'm curious to see what happens in September, if either side opts out of the current CBA.
If they do, I think that greatly benefits the leafs in the Marner negotiations. The idea of missing out on an entire years pay due to lockout would be enough pressure on Marner to bridge the gap and get a long term deal signed.

there is just no way with players like Kucherov and Stone signing for 9.5 and aho 8.5
that mitch should get the numbers his side is reported to be asking for
im tired of talking about this - senstroll
Kuch signed a while ago and is older
Stone is older and overpaid - has never sniffed 80pts let alone 90. Not a comparable.
Aho's contract should lower marners per year average.
hopefully. |

I really doubt he's even asking for the numbers being reported.
The issue has always been term. Marner wants to prove he's the best in the game and so if the Leafs want to buy UFA years they'll have to pay him as the best or they'll have to relent and take him for 3 years or less.
RFA numbers are easier to negotiate ...less of a divide. I think Stone got the largest "RFA year only" figure when he got $7.35 on a 1 yr deal. That was his last RFA year so he had a lot of leverage. Stone was an elite winger when he signed that deal but maybe Marner has an argument for a little more $$. I would think that the 3 year numbers would be about ~7.5 or 8.0 at most.

Growing up, I used to watch Commander Tom on Saturday mornings for the cartoons. It was a Buffalo station. Every weekend, during commercial breaks, I used to hear, "A fire rages in downtown Tonawanda, more on news at noon" ALL the time.
. . .and as a seven or eight year old child, I remember thinking, "Someone should put that fire out."
