The athletic has a good article today on how much NHL players really make.

It’s still a lot obviously...but a 5 million dollar contract is a lot less then we think.

Escrow shaves almost a million off that.

The diet these players have to be on, the lifestyle. Every player has to buy a few 1,000$ suits.

And the staff for each teams are incredibly underpaid(which I didn’t know) and players are expected to tip them like restaurants.

It all adds up.

This is a big LOL coming from the Team that hasn't won a playoff series since 2004.

The C is more for the media and fans. I don’t think it changes much for the team.

A letter doesn’t change the leadership that has developed over the years.

But it seems JT is the best with the media, he never seems angry towards them. He’s been the one player who’s been actually talking about marner this summer.

I’d say JT with a close second to Matthews.


Edit: I wish NHL steaks did it like we did in pee wee just have everyone on the team vote.

I'm turning down $10mil X 8 years every single day of the week if I'm Marner because I am simply worth much much more than that.

5 years X $10.5 million is a fair deal on both sides. Maybe Marner gives us an extra year as a favor and goes for 6.

Just my opinion, man. I think Marner is electric and exciting to watch. I just think AM and JT are better players.

- JT has been a star in the league for years. Constantly putting up good numbers. He’s made players around him better his whole career, not just one season. Also good enough for Team Canada is pretty solid reasoning also.

- AM scores. He’s a Centre. He scores at 5v5. Not too sure the stat but since coming into the league he’s amongst the top 3 I think. He stronger along the boards. I get position dictates, but he doesn’t play anyone near as talented as JT. (Respectfully). Maybe a stretch as another point, but 1st overall pick.

- Marner kills penalties, absolutely. I don’t think his 5v5 defensive game is dominent though. Just average. His PK is good for sure. He’s great at using his offensive anticipation/read when he’s on the PK.

I suppose I’m gonna show my age by looking at it this way, but I still believe players should be paid on merit/what they show consistently vs what they are thought to be capable of. I guess a mix of those thoughts is probably the best.

Again, I like watching Marner play and he’s a real good player, just not worth being paid like the other 2. At least not yet.
