Hey guys. Just signed in today to see the details of the imminent bridge deal for McAvoy. Did the late night call with a GM mess up the deal? - uofcguy
Bruins have signed PTO Glen Wesley to scare McAvoy into signing a bridge deal. |

Unfortunately, Mcavoy’s agent went fishing for tuna off the Coast of Portugal and has turned his cell phone off so he doesn’t scare the fish. |

OK I think Anderson (and how he plays ) is more important to the fortunes of the leaf's than any other player on that team. Marner is a great player but I do not think you want to go with 3 players in the 11 million range as I think the Marner camp is pushing for if you are the GM. At some point you say to yourself I am done and you trade Marner to get someone to play with Reilly (and maube + assets) save some cap space and Presto the leafs finally beat the bruins in the playoffs. - Robeun
With what they signed Kap/Johnsson for, and the current depth of forward they are probably the only team in the league that could get away with 3 forwards at 11, but to have the cap space and some flexibility they would need to trade Nylander out. |

It doesn't seem like Nylander is going anywhere. Riding shotgun for Auston Matthews and scoring 70+ points seems to be where he'll be this season. |

Not possible. We don't have the draft picks required to give up as compensation for signing an RFA. - bullethead7
I think you need 4 of your own first-round picks in the next 5 years so I believe they could offer-sheet someone. Please, anyone, let me know if I'm wrong about this. |

I really like Marner as a player. He would a huge boost for any contending team. Hard for teams to put together a package that would fair compensation for the Leafs. There are only a few contending teams (eg., Colorado) that have the CAP space and enough talent depth to make a realistic offer. |

He would be making a huge mistake. After Nylander last year, fans have a short fuse. He would face a huge backlash from many fans. After all these years of underperforming and outright chokes fans have very little tolerance for a player trying to squeeze a team that has accomplished nothing! |

I don't think fans are a factor. |

Possibly, but I think he reads Hockeybuzz, and he knows leafs fans have a short memory. If I am Marner, I bet on myself... Hold out for max$$, join the team in Dec, produce over a PPG, be adored by leafs nation again... |

Exactly. If fans mattered so much, why is Nylander, a holdout, who (frank)ed the dog all last year still on the team? Because they don't. I mean honestly, the team has been run by bafoons for 50 years and people think the fans matter. |

Perhaps not to the player or his agent. But the fans are a huge issue for the brand. After Nylander and another playoff choke, fans are limited in their capacity for tolerance. If the fans revolt strongly against Marner and his agent, the Leafs will look at trade options rather than deal with another sit out of training camp and the early season. Marner's agent is playing chicken with a team that cannot afford another disappointing season.

Most likely scenario is Marner and the Leafs have already agreed on the basic parameter of a deal. But to fit the cap they'll wait until day 1 when Clarkson goes on LTIR and then sign Marner to maximize cap flexibility. Until then, the uninformed will write stuff about offer sheets and bad blood. |

This make sense but if this were happening you would think both sides would sending out more positive signals.

Yup, could very well be. So he will mis training camp but will fit under the cap at his number after game 1. |

If he signs a bridge then that means their window to win is 2 years. Once that is up Marner will get a huge contract and Freddy will get 10-10.5M.
How will they even assemble a team at that point?

If Marner signs a 2 year deal, he's OUT of the Leafs after that contract ends lol - jtylerm
tOtAlLY!!!
Maybe allowing RFA’s to walk after their ELC will be negotiated into the new CBA!!

This is what happens when a GM has a big mouth and publicly says he can keep them all and publicly says he won't trade people rather keeping everything internal. |

He actually screwed himself by making that statement. Agents know they have a gun to his head and he's toast if they lose Marner. |

Settle down, he's not Aho. Marner is good buddies with Suzuki and likely is aware of the insane talent coming in the next few years so I'm sure if Dumbazz continues to lowball him like he did Kneelander he would gladly entertain a change of scenery to a team that appreciates his worth and will be a contender in the next few years..just like Aho did.
