Tyler Cameron: It's Getting Crowded Back There
With yesterday's announcement of Philip Holm signing with the Blackhawks adds to the plethora of defencemen in the organization.
Holm is a 27-year-old left-handed defenceman. He's not amazingly gifted offensively, nor is he outstanding with his defensive play. He appears to be an average bottom pairing guy for the Hawks to stash in Rockford.
So, another D added… hmmmm. The Hawks are going to have a lot of options in Chicago and Rockford, with spillover into the Indy Fuel.

Good morning, Ty. When you refer to one-way deals, do you really mean they're not waiver exempt? |

Yes. 2 way deals are cheaper if the person is sent down to Rockford. Different money values, in Holm's case (I think, so don't quote me on it) 700k in the NHL & 400k in the AHL. Some one-way deals are waiver exempt though, like Sikura. |

It feels like some glut of D is getting moved somewhere for a Top 9 F that the Hawks feel will give an edge that they don't have. My guesses:
- Third line C
- Top 6 RW
- Stash and trade off "bottom pair/AHL" quality D to teams in cap trouble/injury trouble for draft picks
All I've got. Haven't been ahead of any of Bowman's moves this offseason. Biggest curveball yet to come. |

I think the Holm signing is an insurance policy id Boqvist needs to play with the Hogs. Solid swedish pro to help lay center field for Boq to run wild. (Hammer to soupy)
Colliton is def using his Swede connection. |

I think it is going to be the top 6 that you listed, and then Koekkoek and Dahlstrom battle for the remaining spot, and the loser gets traded for a pick or put on waivers. |

Maybe, but not necessarily. Guys like Osipov, Ryczek and McArdle can all be sent to Indy if needed. I could see all of them ending up there.
In Chicago there will be Keith, Seabrook, Murphy, Maatta, de Haan and Gustafsson in the top 6 (not too shabby). Koeokkoek and Dahlstrom will battle it out for #7 and maybe one of them gets moved rather than risking losing them to waivers. Either way it's not a big deal.
In Rockford there will be Boqvist, Beaudin, Krys, Gilbert, TuuLOLa, Carlsson and Holm. With a possible addition of Koekkoek or Dahlstrom. |

Of the 15 Dmen on NHL contracts, I think only Seabrook, Murphy, and Boqvist shoot right handed. |

I don't think there would be much risk in losing them to waivers. It would be risky for a team to pick them up, as they would have to remain on the NHL roster for the entire season, and they are fringe NHL players at best right now. |

But Gus played on the right side some last season. Does anyone know which side he was better on, right or left? |

Holm could just be insurance in case one of Dahlstrom or KooKoo get claimed on waivers. As much as I’d love to see another trade, it may just be a cheap insurance move. |

I am trying to figure out the economics of this. Maybe one of our experts can answer this.
1) Philip Holm played in Sweden in 2016/17. What was his salary? +/-
2) Capfriendly is showing him making a $92,500 signing bonus plus $832,500 prorated over his games in the NHL and only $70,000 prorated over his games in the minors with Vancouver in 2017/18. Having only played one game in the NHL he probably made about $170,000 +/- ($92,500 signing bonus, $70,000 minors, $10,000 one game in the NHL).
3) He played in the KHL 2018/19. What was his salary? +/-
It is likely he plays in Rockford this year for $300,000. Will that be more, less, or about the same as what he made in 2016/17 and in 2018/19? |

Sides really matter more for stay at home d-men. Gus (same with Jok) plays up so it’s not as difficult to play opp side once used to it. |

I wonder how much Patrick Maroon wants? I think he would be the perfect (cheap) fit for Toews and Kane. Seems like St. Louis isn't even attempting to resign him. |

Also consider that de Haan might not be ready to start the season. I know there's been speculation that Boqvist will get an NHL audition at that point but I don't see it happening. Dahlstrom and Koekkoek would likely rotate in the 6D spot if de Haan isn't ready. |

Play Maatta on the 2nd pairing and PP, then trade him if his stock goes up. He could potentially land a 1st rounder, as he is a talented offensive D when given the chance. I assume I am honestly shocked at all the LD you guys acquired. Gustafsson is basically pushed out of the lineup after notching 60 points??? It just doesn't add up to trade for DeHaan and Maatta each making 4M+ per season and playing behind Keith. Or is Keith available? |

I don't particularly like Keith having to support Gustafsson. Having a rover in Keith and an extra winger in Gustafsson doesn't fit, IMO. Pair up the veterans who have a history together.
de Haan with Murphy as the shutdown pair. Keep Dahlstrom or Holm up if de Haan needs more rehab time.
Maatta is the stay-at-home defender to allow Gustafsson to be the riverboat gambler and create offense like he wants to. |
