Ya, and especially this year Lucas because we have a weird situation here. There are FOUR guys who should be around the same AAV. Marner, Point, rantenan, Tkatchuk. ALL great young players and ALL hoping to hit the 10 million or so number, maybe even a bit higher.
But, it is held up because of a 2nd set of circumstances.
Word has it that Marner would like in the Matthews range. The other 3 LOVE this, and their agents are telling them to hang tight. They all want Marnet to set the bar, because he can use the Matthews contract as a measuring tool and request something similar (maybe lower, but he would love the 5 year deal and likely want 10 or 10,5 for those years).
Marner is the logical one to set the bar because....Rantanen has McInnon dragging him down, as Colorado can argue the 6 million MacInnon makes means that Rantanen shouldn't make much more. Tkatchuk is on Calgary. They don't want to pay, can't afford to pay, and want to low ball Tkatchuk as much as possible. And, Point is with Tampa, he will sign for slightly under Marner's number I would guess...because of the Tax situation.

Now, I am not saying any of that is valid....just that the other agents want Marners contract to HELP them get more on theirs. In fact, IMO all 4 SHOULD get around 6 years at 8-9 each and all 4 teams would not be too upset. But, that is not how it will work. All will hang tight until mARNER SIGNS THE BOTTOM LINE....AND THE OTHER 3 WILL...oops...damn cap-lock...sign within a week or two, if not days.

The Matthews 5 year-11.5 is the main reason all is held up. Marner wants close. Leafs want 10 or 11 over 8 years (Too long for Marner)...or 8-9 over 4-5 years (not enuf $$$ for Marner. So.....we are stuck here for now.
