He is gone July 1, 2024

People don't want to hear it, but it's happening. All those people laughing when the Leafs signed Tavares are going to have a different perspective all of a sudden. I suspect people will be more p*ssed at Matthews than the team that signs him.

If the Leafs have not won a cup by his 4th year on this contract, I hope they trade him. He has a NMC in the last year.

Make him captain, adore him, face of the franchise, tons of sponsorship/endorsement deals, etc. It worked with Kawhi Leonard... oh wait.

Of course he doesn't.

None of us know what will happen. A lot can change in 5 years. Maybe the Leafs win a bidding war after year 5, who knows?

I think he's gone. So the moral of the story is, enjoy watching him for the next 5 years and hope they win a cup.

It's not unreasonable to think Matthews will leave after this deal. One thing the Leafs will have if he does move on is $11.6 Million to spend on a different player. Not saying that player would be better at all, but that possibility would exist.

You don't even have to look that far. Leafs fans were all excited when Tavares signed here.

We may only have to endure 2 years without him because McDavid becomes a ufa 2 years later.

People always thought kessel wouldn’t stay but he signed. He left for other reasons.

It’s ok for Burke to voice his opinion.
It’s what he’s paid to do.

He didn’t say he knows matthews will leave...just that he thinks. No biggie.

The 2 things the Leafs will have in their favor is the ability to offer the extra year (unless the CBA is changed?) and they have deep pockets, so at least we know internal budget will not be an issue.

I think the biggest issue I will have is if the organization lets him walk for nothing and wins 0 cups while he is here. You can't let that happen. and "cap space" is not a good enough consolation prize.

If we think trolling Leafs fans is bad now, it is going to be endless wh... just wait.

Matthews?

His reasoning was basically, taxes.

We know that isn't everything, but I am pretty sure Burke knows that that concern is out there among players. It has been shown multiple times that the net pay is quite a bit different in lower or no-tax markets.

Nope
Won’t be angry at all if he leaves, it’s sports....it happens.
It’s 4-5 years away. Who cares right now.

McDavid will be 29 years old when his current contract expires, he may be the best player in hockey at that point, but I would think there is a chance there may be better options by the 26-27 season.

Yes Matthews...not marner.
Yes Burke knows for sure, much more than anyone on here that that is a concern for a lot players.
But it’s 5 years away.
Things can change.
