The moment the Leafs acquired David Clarkson I said that in order to maximize LTIR and cap flexibility, they would delay signing Marner until Day 1 of the season. They have a handshake deal on this. The rest is just grandstanding. In fact, having him skate in Switzerland is a clever way to stay sharp after the lesson on Nylander taking a long time to get up to speed. Anyone with a basic understanding of how the cap works would assume this as the default outcome. Obviously if they agree to something beforehand and want this done then they lose some flexibility. But I'd bet on Marner "holding out" through the preseason and magically signing on day 1. Surprised Ek's sources haven't mentioned that... |

Fair enough, but if Marner isn't signed by Day 1 then the Leafs organization looks like a bunch of dummies (are they run by Tanner?). |

How exactly do you make that statement with no knowledge of what is now being, or has ever been, discussed between the Leafs and Marner's camp.
You have made a pretty definitive statement. I am sure we would all be very entertained by the information and thought process you used. |

I believe he's implying that the Leafs would need the LTIR relief from Horton/Clarkson to accommodate Marner's contract...and he's right. Can't reap the benefits of LTIR'ing players until the first day of the season

I also thought of this scenario, but it would seem like a sick joke if this wasn't somehow told beforehand to the media. |
