Tempting as it is to go with a safe pick like Kakko (he has everything he needs to beat Hughes ala Nuge V Landeskog in 2011-12), I'll go off the board and say Alexandre Texier.
Texier has the scoring pedigree and a pretty wide open field to step into a scoring role with Columbus after the exodus. The spot next to Jenner and Anderson might not be perfect but there's room on the 1st PP unit to make up for it.
Olofsson is interesting, too. Stepping into a roster with a revamped blueline focused on offense and a spot open in the top-6. |

I don’t think Jack is the guy. He’s middle to lower end when it comes to ceiling for 1st overall picks. He’ll fall in the Hischier / Nuge range. Quality player but not a top line guy
I’d put my $$ on someone like Makar |

Hughes broke pretty much every record in the books at NTDP. Averaged essentially 2 PPG his hole time there. Nothing but praise regarding his hockey IQ and elite skill set. Are you even paying attention? Or.. are you trolling? |

Is the hype around makar real ? I never see anyone really dig up his stats when bringing him up ? I know its a very short sample size so the fact he produced at all is going to pump his numbers right up. Im curious though if he did so well because he was sheltered or was he used like a top pairing dman ? And did he face top competition or did he do what he did on the pp and against bottom lines ? |

You know absolutely nothing about Nico if thats what you think look up more then just points and paint the whole picture instead of going oh he didnt get 60 his rookie season. He played top line center against the leagues best and faired well unlike a lot of the guys who you will automatically throw ahead of him because you have taken literally next to nothing in to account but points. |

Most of that was unbiased lol what about any of that wasnt true ?
I dont think he will win the calder it rarely goes to a player just drafted but he should do well.
The calder is kind of silly when its comparing players from 18 to 25 for the cut off so there are players at all different stages of their development in the calder race. |

Pretty much a point per game player since he was 15. Almost single handedly carried Umass to the ncaa finals. Won the hobey baker. Scored on his first shot of his first shift in the playoffs against Calgary's top line. Didn't play top minutes, but definitely was used in big situations and was a presence on the ice 100% of the time. Like you said, small sample size, but watching him play playoff hockey as someone just stepping into the NHL, he will be a force. Controls the ice like the top guys in the league as a rookie. There will be growing pains, but all of the essentials to be a dominant D man are already there 10 games deep into his career. |
