Matthews and Tavares and Marner (and just to piss people off Nylander) are elite superstars who have yet to take us to a cup.

I would be happy if we could win 1 ROUND...!

3x9 MIGHT get it done. I’d do it.
- DrunkenCanuck

I'd do 5x$9, not 3.

If we're talking 3 years, probably 7.5 or 8 ish.

He's a real good player. The Leafs definitely do not want to be in this situation again in 3 years. Who knows if they'll have the space for the big money deal at that point or not.

Goals >>> Assists A 1st line C always gets more. I also said Matthews was overpaid a bit.

I wonder if Domi gets 8 x 11 to match Matthews

- Archaic

Hey, if Domi produces as much as Matthews does, why wouldn't he?

Name the last nhler regardless of position to earn 11 million a season with a career high of 26 goals. Go.
- joel878

Doughty, Drew: 16 goals.
Karlsson: Erik: 20 goals

That was easy.

Even Panarin got a career high 31 goals.... it's only 5 more goals than Marner.

I think it's 3 at 10 mil that was reported, leafs wanted to give him 6 at 10.5.

That 10.5 in Toronto has got to be worth 12-13 in Carolina or Anaheim even with the conversion thanks to all the endorsements he rakes in Toronto. That and the entire world knows he wants to play in Toronto.

Time to turn up the heat, tell his agent he has permission to negotiate a contract with another team. If Marner sees an exit door that equals not playing for his hometown team and a massive hit to the endorsement potential, bet the entitlement dials down.

And if it doesn't, (frank) him. Not the kind of character the team needs at that point. Let whatever team he's found a contract with pay out the ass for him in a trade.

Win/win.

You’re right, except the last paragraph. Loosing Marner for draft picks years away or a Dubas type return on the player would be crippling.

I mean yeah sure, I'll give you that. It's my own fault for not factoring in the idea that elite defenseman, and players in general on the open market can command ridiculous money.

But if those are Marners comparables in negotiation, GL.

You named 3 guys who had earned the opportunity to essentially call their own terms. I'm not sure 3 years in the NHL and only RFA rights puts him in that position...

All of a sudden most of the Leafs 'fans' forgot how good Mitch Marner is.

and after that 31 goals season, he signed for 6mil x 2 (8.22% of cap)
so this is a great example, marner gets 6.7 mil x2

A few years ago, Bergevin tried to sign Lucic and he decided he'd rather go to Edmonton.

Players not wanting to come to Montreal have been a blessing for years in Montreal.

The few times they do want to come, we end up with Karl Alzner.

Enjoy Gardilol.

After that 31 goals season, Panarin had 74 points.

Marner had 94.

You can't just pretend only goals matter because it helps dropping Marner's value.

they are on two completely different levels.

marner is nhl elite.

nylander is a good 1st/2nd liner.

Agreed. But if I'm Dubas I'm telling them to go negotiate still holding all the cards. He doesn't have to make a deal he feels won't benefit the team right now.

If it results in him being sucked into an offer sheet, well if you hate the offer, take the picks. Not ideal, but it gives him some premium draft picks to shop around to find what he needs. And it's probably still a better situation for the team than Nylander 2.0.

Either way it's time for him to make a power move. I think the team has the leverage at the end of the day, you can only play nice about it so long when the whole world knows the player holding out in this scenario really stands to lose huge endorsement potential and the ability to play for his hometown team.

I think Marner will sign with the Leafs when they are able to put a couple of players on LTIR to keep within the cap. Marner is a dynamite player.
