If you’ve ever heard his dad and or the comments he makes regarding his son you’d understand what i mean. He’s a real beauty Paul Marner. He’s abolutely the problem.

Let’s start by saying that Paul Marner doesn’t totally buy all that.

He thinks Mitch, the second of his two sons, has been overlooked his entire hockey-playing life. Yes, Mitch liked to have fun around the rink, liked to laugh, even dance, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t driven to reach incredible heights or that he wasn’t, in fact, a star already.

And it’s about time the media in Toronto realized it.

“I’ll just be honest with you,” Mitch’s dad said. “It drives our family nuts when we hear you guys all talk about who should be the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Mitch never hardly gets any consideration. It’s because he’s like this happy-go-lucky little kid. But he championed the London Knights to the Memorial Cup with that same happy (personality). I watched a guy like Doug Gilmour who had a lot of joy on and off the ice but was a real competitor.

“And that’s Mitch.

“Mitch has (always) had the killer instinct when the puck drops, but I’ve also told (him) and his mom’s told him, ‘One of the things that make you who you are is the love you show of the game and never stop having fun playing the game. Because when you do, that’s going to take away something that’s made you who you are.'”

As Paul notes, Mitch was leading the Leafs in scoring before he injured his shoulder as a rookie in spite of ice-time the family considered, well, a little underwhelming. Mitch then topped the team with 69 points as a sophomore — again, despite ranking sixth among Toronto forwards in minutes — and he added another nine points in a dominant playoff series with Boston.

Today, he’s again leading the Leafs in scoring — with 43 points in 33 games following a two-goal outing in Florida — and on pace for a career-high 107 points.

But he’s only becoming a star now?

Mitch Marner is on pace for 107 points. (Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports)
It’s always been that way with Mitch, Paul would argue. Take the year he was drafted into the NHL. It was 2015 and it was all about Connor and when it wasn’t Connor, it was Jack.

But what about Mitch?

He burned the OHL with 126 points that season — more than McDavid (120) managed in Erie and more than John Tavares (104), Steven Stamkos (105), Taylor Hall (106) and Tyler Seguin (106) mustered in their draft years.

Paul still remembers one night during the OHL playoffs — March 31, 2015 — when Mitch hit the scoreboard six times in a big win over Kitchener. McDavid had only a single assist against Sarnia. But guess who Sportsnet was talking about afterward?

“And in any other draft, if Connor’s not there, you would’ve been talking about Mitch as first overall pick,” Paul Marner says.

He makes a lot of very good points in this rant. I really hope this gets so messed up they have to trade him. He is definetely an Elite player in this league. One less on that team would make me very happy.

The Leafs have been persistent in pushing both a 7 yr and 8 yr extension at Marner. The $11 mil per offer was made in June and included the $1.6 mil in B bonuses Toronto wouldn’t pay Marner in his entry level contract. 3 yr ext remains the focus.

I am curious why they did not offer Marner the same type of thing they did for JT. They gave JT almost the whole contract as a signing bonus. That saved him a TON of $$ as it is taxed at a much lower rate in Canada to a salary. JT makes only 1 mill a year ish on his contract b/c he got the rest as a signing bonus. My guess is if they offered the same $ to Marner with a similar type of contract he would take the 7 or 8 years. (60 mill signing bonus and 1 mill a year) He can't get that extra $ on other teams. ....

Marner will get whatever he wants in the end. There’s no way the Leafs will have another Nylander situation again. That didn’t work out for anyone. If they let it get to that point all bets are off imo but I doubt very much it gets to that level.

I could've sworn when I looked at it yesterday that they had about $15.5M left but it's still saying about that much. Maybe CapFriendly hasn't totally updated their page yet. So either about $15.5M or about $9.25M

#Isles coach Barry Trotz said there will be plenty of consideration when it comes to D Noah Dobson, who is not AHL eligible. Organization will have to weigh what benefits, if any, Dobson would get out of another junior season. Trotz said that might even slow Dobson's development.

Josh Ho-Sang is in the house. On whether there’s an opportunity to earn a spot here: “It’s up to me to create and them to give me a chance.”

Asked about last season: “I was up for 10 games. We went 9-1. I think I helped.”

what a dope... just be quiet and play Josh.

Isles rookies win with Wahlstrom scoring the game winner last night. Article has good things to say about about Koivula and Dobson.

Both Otto (we still calling him Special K?), and Ollie had very good games. Granted it's against a bunch of Flyer's prospects ,but by all accounts they both looked great.

Dobson had a couple of goofy turnovers, but overall he played pretty well. Wahlstrom was racking up shots and sniped the GW goal in the shootout. Otto looked great but he's also got a full season of pro hockey against men under his belt. I think he's going to be a player though, he's pretty talented.

Montreal has to be one of the teams in question and possibly the isles. Conner scores a lot, not as much as laine but hes a better all around player. I think barzals possession offsets laines lack of it and they could be a lethal combo but who is going to play d on that line?

I’d much rather Connor over Laine. He’s the much more competent player of the two.
