Fine with me. Classic bridge deal.

Maybe the extra competition at C will make him a better player.

You have to like this team down the middle with Nico, Jack, Pavel and Travis.

I'm glad we signed Zacha because if Hughes can't step in as our 2C on day one we can play Zacha there. It takes a little pressure off and will let Jack adjust to the NHL.

yea, I don't think our "4th line center" will be getting typical 4th line minutes, unless Zacha really poops the bed. The PK time will bump his minutes by at least 2, and like you said, maybe Hughes struggles here and there.. maybe Zacha is actually improved and looks like a strong 2-way center. Then there's Zajac, who, unless he lost a big step, is solid enough as a 2-way center. Nico is really the only clear cut center that should get a nice chunk of minutes more than the rest The other 3.. they could very well have similar ice times.

I've always been much more in the trade him camp given that time is running short before his perceived value to other teams equals out with his real value, but if hes going to stay, this is a pretty good deal. He'll be a defensive ace that can do spot duty higher in the lineup when needed, and those guys are worth 2.25 a year. The goal now for the coaching staff has to be getting Zacha to a place where he can successfully replace Zajac when the latter eventually decides to retire.

This also probably means there isn't a spot for Rooney on the opening night roster, but there is a place or two on the wing to be had. Bastian, Boqvist, McLeod and Anderson have it all in front of them, hopefully they come in and make it hard for Hynes to send them down (or to Sweden).

Am I the only one who couldn't care less about Rooney? Is he on a 2-way deal? We have plenty of kids that will get their shots sometime this year with injuries, or next year.

This deal makes sense all around especially if they decide to go the trade route. I like the idea of him in a package deal he has very cap friendly numbers and term contract. But we are loaded with youth and I wouldn't be surprised to see Ray put together a nice deal.

Great deal for Devs.As a 3rd/4th line center it is good value. Hate to say it, but also makes him attractive trade bait at that price for a third line center....

Playing around with the line-up, I'd like the following combinations. No need to assign line numbers, just let each line play based on the situation.

Hall-Hischier-Palmieri
Wood-Zajac-Coleman
Gusev-Zacha-Bratt
Boqvist-Hughes-Simmonds
Rooney

Vatanen-Subban
Butcher-Severson
Greene-Smith
Muller, Carrick

Tradeable players for LD: Vatanen, Zacha, Wood, McLeod. Bratt or Boqvist if it's someone significant (young and under team control).

This year Rooney gets paid the same if he's in the NHL or AHL @ $ 700,000.

You should only care about Rooney in the fact that he's a quality depth reserve player. He played decently last year and the coaching staff liked his consistent approach.

Try to think of Rooney as the antidote to calling up guys like Blake Pietia who was horrible as a fill in.

Boqvist looked good in the prospect challenge and I think he's going to make it tough not to put him on the roster. Ty Smith didn't seem to play as strong as expected.

I actually really like your forward combinations. Hughes and Boqvist look great together and will most likely play well with a power forward who can get things done along the boards. Not to mention putting Zacha in a position for success with Bratt and Gusev. Would be very ok with this.

What if...

Shero got Zacha before he bolted because he was planning on using him in a Laine trade... And the plot thickens...

I don't think the KHL was ever going to pay more than 500k for a defensive C, so this works for Zacha! The RFA rights are great for the Devs!

Greene wasn't good enough to be a top 4 D last season. Adding P.K, and Smith to the roster is huge. But you still have our captain in the top 4? Doomed

Zacha would be a pretty minor piece of a larger package in a deal for Laine. I'm sure we could substitute that piece. Can you imagine the Jets saying we'll trade you Laine, but if you can't include ZACHA, no dice? No way. Just no way.

Zacha is a quality player. But Jets have cap issues so its not like they can take a bunch of $ in return. I'd imagine, a Zacha, prospects and picks.
