OK so one down one to go. - blueshirts_fan
I don't know what to expect
on one hand I am like, ok, Lemieux is done and Tony D will be done today
on the other hand I could see see Tony D thinking that Pionk got 3 million why shouldn't I? |

b/c he's been on three teams in his first three seasons or so, and he's been a headcase and inconsistent up until last season. What's he thinking? |

Honestly, I think Tony will be around 2. We would still be ok though if we bury Smith and send two forwards down. There will be injuries too around the league, no guarantee even with salary retained that we wouldn't trade Names anyway |

All of what you are saying is true. However whether anyone wants to believe metrics are or not, he was the Rangers best D by a mile according to them. There is a 100% chance his agent is bringing that up. |

Can Tony D still attend camp? Or does he need to sign the qualifier first in order to practice? |

He's screwed if he holds out. Take the QO for the year and prove you've matured enough to warrant more fishnagels. |

I'm not advocating he do this, but how would he be screwed? He could go to Europe or the KHL (for perhaps more money), play for a year and still prove himself.
I don't think he wants to hold on, but I don't think he wants to play for pennies either. To me he deserves a modest pay increase. |

Forgot about the KHL, worked for Zacha. Agree he deserves a bump and it's not his fault Gorton overspent this summer. Or maybe management isn't convinced he's matured enough to earn a bigger deal.
I'd bet on the former. |

What are ramifications for a contract later in year or next if he does go over seas? Is he still NYR property? It's not like he can go to KHL and be UFA next season...right? |

He'd still be NYR property indefinitely.
I could be wrong about this, but I think we may see KHL and Europe as leverage going forward. Zacha is the obvious example, but you could debate if Nylander going home had some effect as well. |

That's probably true, though there are non Russian KHL teams. I'm actually shocked for example, Beijing isn't bigger market than it is. Helsinki too.
I don't think hockey will ever 100% be like basketball, but guys who aren't stars in the NBA do really well playing in Europe and China. Probably won't get to that level, but I wouldn't rule out eventually it becoming more of an option. |
