Great statement move by Bill Guerin not letting this drag into the season.

Signing a guy turning 30 to a 7 year deal at 7+ mil is a good statement move?

Pretty good for a guy who was invited to camp to try and make that team almost 10 years ago. The wild sure are wild $penders lolllol

Sure, but the statement is "We are dedicated to keeping this aging core together for as long as we can, to give them as many chances at replicating their previous success as possible."

I really like Spurgeon as a player, but I think that contract kind of sucks. Oh well, not my team.

ughhhh

Spurgeon’s contract also includes a no-movement clause before a modified no-trade clause that includes 10 teams he can not be traded to kicks in the final three years, sources said

Yeah his underlying numbers make him an elite defensmen in the league. He's one of the best on the defensive side of the ice. Great signing.

I was going to be ok with the $ and term until I found out that there is a full NTC the first 4 years, then the good old 10 team NTC for the last 3 years. This really scares me and I am hoping that Spurgeon season last year was a sign of things to come. Until last year, he hadn't played a full season with the Wild in the previous 8 seasons. Yes, he is one of the better defensemen in the league, but with his smallish size, I can't see a career going well beyond 35, maybe 36. So that leaves 2-3 years of a diminished skills small d-man.

The only real hope is the whispers that the salary cap will start increasing annually at a much larger rate than it has been in the past few years. If that comes true, this might end up just being very good foresight. That 12-yr old little kid better score 25 goals and 65 pts this year.
