Can someone re jog my memory on CHL, AHL and signings...if Legare is signed does he still have to go to CHL if he doesn't play in NHL?...did he HAVE to be signed at all right now?...does signing him now cut into RFA years?

Im getting a Sprong-ish feel from this...

It's an age thing. Depending on his age he's either going to be in the Q or AHL. I believe he has to be 19 to play in the AHL if I'm not mistaken.

I think we can largely judge certain pairings. Sid/Guentz, Geno/Galch, Bjug/Hornie. I think the rest will be shifted around well into the season. Guys like Simon, Kahun, McCann, Rust, Tanev etc will all be given chances to earn promotions.

On another note: I really liked DiPauli during the preseason last year. He's another guy that can really fly.....just needs to stay healthy. I'd add him to the possible call-up list with Lafferty, Johnson.

- madmike71

I think McCann might be stapled to the 3rd line if that happens since he's on the same side as Guentzel and Galchenyuk, at least until an injury.

The CHL protects its product by the transfer agreement. I’m pretty sure If a kid isn’t in the NHL he has to return until he ages out. Signing now does not effect RFA status. He has to play at least 10 regular season games for that to kick in. A la Sprong.

Hope Riikola and Gudbranson play together.

Lafferty and Marino the only ones to get in every game? They both deserve the long looks so far.

I could see McCann, Simon, and Kahun all cycling through 3LW to see who sticks. But yeah, McCann is pretty much 3LW or 4LW until injury since he is rather exclusive to the left side.

I'd love to see Galchenyuk on the RW. Sullivan is gonna have to get over that whole thing of liking guys on the "natural" side. If Sullivan were here when we had Neal would he have neutered him to the LW?

I really don't think that we have a problem with defensive depth as long as Gudbranson and Johnson stay on the bottom pair. To have Riikola, Ruhwedel, and Trotman as 7, 8, and 9 I think is very deep. I am wondering who we are going to trade before the season starts, I'm hoping it's Bjugstad and not Rust, we are deep at center, not so much at wing. We'll see what happens.

Ehhh...I would say we have a huge dropoff at the center position after Crosby and Malkin. Likewise, there is a huge dropoff on defense after the top 4. I mean, we're just hoping that a call-up #7 D can tread water in place of our incompetent #6.

Just curious, who are you counting as our centers after Crosby, Malkin and Bjug? The Simon experiment isn't going well, Galch is probably ill-suited for that role, Blueger is still a question mark, and McCann is probably not an NHL center.

If it were opposite day this entire paragraph is true. Other than Guddy, he's been solid for our third pair.

Posted before reading this but this is exactly spot on. I never even considered Galch whatsoever for center, was that even a thing? Bjugstad gets some hate but honestly he kinda works out well with Horny because he does put pucks on/towards the net.

Yeah, even Bjug only plays center by default because there was/is no one else to play 3C after Brassard failed miserably. I like him as a player, I just don't think he's that great of a center as evidenced by his poor assist numbers. I think the Pens have been wanting to play him at winger, which is probably his natural position. My guess is that they are trying Simon at center so they can do just that.

I will say that I've liked what I've seen from Blueger at the end of last year and this preseason, so maybe this is the year he becomes a regular and locks down one of the bottom 6 center positions. It better be as he is now 25. Crazy to think he is only 2 years younger than Bjug, who seems like he has been playing for a decade.

I would never ever describe the Pens D as very deep when their third pair might be JJ - Guds and their 7th and 8th could be Rikks and Trots.

I’m wondering if we see a falloff on Peterson’s play playing away from a Gudbranson. Also everyone looks at Malkins time on ice spent with Pettersson and describes it as good. Wasn’t Big G there too?

It's true, but I think Pen's will still try to trade a player or two. I think much like JR is always willing to deal. I think a deal will depend on if he feels he will get good value or not.

Not about the numbers. Some trades are addition by subtraction.

The problem is that Sully/GMJR seem to see something in JJ which neither we nor analytics understand... I guess they will wait till Christmas and then know more about our needs; i don't see a trade before start of season, but wouldn't be against it if the RFA carrousel opens windows of opportunity...
