The Leafs came within a game of defeating the Bruins, a team that finished tied for points with Calgary for 2nd overall and made it to the Finals.

The Leafs also outhit Boston - something rather shocking considering how little hitting they did during the regular season. Who's to say this new squad will be any less truculent when called upon? Who have the Leafs given up beyond Kadri (a guy who missed half the 1st round) that added necessary toughness to the team?

Also, I'm not so sure that Babs is now willing to let Auston command as many minutes as he wants but if he did... wouldn't that be a good thing?!

This team looks to be fielding an improved D and at least as much skill up front as last season. I'm trying very hard here to see how this team has suddenly turned into a ballet on ice that will get mauled come playoff time.

That is very debatable.

Anything is debatable.

Adding Tyson Barrie should be enough of an argument to settle it though from a D perspective. Adding one of the top scoring d-men in the league and a guy who will chew up 22+ mins a game should put the final nail in the coffin to any naysayers.

I'd be curious to hear how you might think last year's D is better.

As per forwards, I'm thinking Spezza + Kerfoot + Mikheyev should offset losing Kadri + Marleau.

Barrie is a horrible defender. Spezza and Kerfoot are as well. Defensively the Leafs are worse than last year.

Oh.

And who have they replaced who were better defensively?

As bad as Z and Hainsey were in their end, Ceci and Barrie were actually worse. They are among the worst defenders in the NHL.

Kadri and Brown
