The Leafs will finish: First in their division & first overall

The main reason for this is: Firepower

The biggest surprise will be: Morgan Rielly

The biggest disappointment will be: Kerfoot

The unsung hero will be: Andersen

The goat will be: Matthews

People think this guy is good, but he sucks (and the reason is): Johnsson. He doesn't suck but he's an average grinder with average hands, unlike his comparable Kapanen.

People think this guy sucks, but he's not so bad (and the reason is): Andersen. Outside of Leafs nation he doesn't get anywhere near the respect he deserves.

The best move Dubas did in the off-season was: Barrie & Kerfoot for Kadri.

If I was GM, I would have: Given Marners camp take it or leave it offers a long time ago.

If you remember nothing else I said, remember I said this about the 2019-20 Leafs:
They will steamroll their way to their first cup since '67 and make it look easy peasy lemon squeezy.

The Leafs will finish:

2nd in the Atlantic, 4th in the East, 6th overall.

If they get home ice against Boston, they win in the 1st round.

Boston had a long season last year and their team is aging so they might take a step back but it'll still be close both in the final standings and in a series.

But they're out in the 2nd round against Tampa Bay. Tampa Bay is just better in every category.

The main reason for this is:

High powered offense / PP, Andersen (weak D and weak back-up). Tougher division this year; Florida, Montreal and Buffalo all got better and the Leafs blueline is still a question mark defensively.

The biggest surprise will be:

Nylander when he gets back on the Matthews gravy train and puts up some career numbers. Hopefully a great season is the impetus for trading him for defense.

The biggest disappointment will be:

The Muzzin / Barrie pairing (both overrated defensively).

Hyman and Dermott coming back from injuries will set them back a bit too.

The unsung hero will be:

Kapanen. Fills in for Hyman, takes his high level speed and creates problems for the other teams in all areas of the ice and becomes a fixture in the top-six.

Rielly. His offensive numbers won't be as good this year but he'll be carrying Ceci on his back most nights. He's going to get used a lot this season to make up for everybody else.

The goat will be:

Ceci. Too many stats that definitely show he's bad at playing defense. If he's used heavily in defensive situations and on the PK, he's going to (frank) up and cost the Leafs a lot of goals against. A total turn over machine.

Hutchinson. Not impressive as a back-up at all. Hasn't been an effective back-up since 2014/2015 and has only played 12 NHL games in the past 2 seasons for a reason.

Babcock. A lot of people are going to blame him if they lose in the 1st round again. His time might be running out given the way he grinds on his players.

People think this guy is good, but he sucks (and the reason is):

Spezza. He's finished and not defensively strong enough to play his role. Good at face-offs though.

Kerfoot. Because he's not as experienced as a 3rd line C / PKer as people think he is. Without his PP time and points, his offense is going to dry up.

People think this guy sucks, but he's not so bad (and the reason is):

Not a lot of people think anybody sucks on this team right now but...

Gauthier. He's a role player who knows his role.

Holl. Role player, needs a chance to prove he play.

The best move Dubas did in the off-season was:

Creative with the salary cap, dumped Zaitsev, signed Johnsson and Kapanen to very good deals and got Marner (cornerstone player) locked up long term.

If I was GM, I would have:

Acquired a legitimate back-up who can play 25-30 games to keep Andersen fresh for the playoffs.

Let Ceci take a (frank)ing walk after acquiring him or front load his contract so they could dump him if he sucks as bad as every major statistic says he does.

Brought in some bigger, stronger, tougher forwards to diversify the group better for the playoffs.

Bring in defensemen that can actually defend and kill penalties.

Kept Kadri. Gonna miss his tenacity. He would have learned his lesson if given another chance. And one of the best contracts in the league.

If you remember nothing else I said, remember I said this about the 2019-20 Leafs:

They're going to score a lot of goals but their defense and their playoff viability will be suspect. This team is all speed and skill but neglect the grittier and defensive side of the game. They rely too much on Andersen and while he's a top 10 goalie (just barely) they basically need him to play like the best goalie in the league to win important games.

The Defence:

Marincin; Girthy McThickerson AKA Pylon
GP: 51 G: 1 A: 7 P: 8

Holl; Roleman
GP: 20 G: 1 A: 5 P: 6

Marincin, Sandin and Holl will all fight for the 6th/7th spots when Dermott returns and one will probably get sent down eventually because they probably can't carry 8 D all year. Personally, would send Sandin down after 9 games to save his ELC for the future but they might not do that.

The Goalies:

Andersen; Lego Wall
GP: 62 W: 37 L: 19 OTL/SO: 6 GAA: 2.74 SV%: .917 SO: 3

Hutchinson; Red Light
GP: 20 W: 8 L: 8 OTL/SO: 4 GAA: 3.00 SV% .905 SO: 0

Back-up should be able to play 10 more games but Babcock will just lean on Andersen too much, like he always does.

The Leafs will finish: 5th in the league. 2nd Atlantic

The main reason for this is: Improved special teams. More consistency throughout the year on the PP and two legitimate dmen running each unit

The biggest surprise will be: Maybe too easy to say Sandin stepping in and securing a spot all year long. But, I'll say there will be a hard decision to be made when Dermott is healthy again.

The biggest disappointment will be: rotating backup goalie (shocker)

The unsung hero will be: Muzzin. steady gets big hits and puts up 40ish points each year.

The goat will be: Matthews playing his off wing on the PP.

People think this guy is good, but he sucks (and the reason is): Ceci

People think this guy sucks, but he's not so bad (and the reason is): Ceci

The best move Dubas did in the off-season was: Bringing in Barrie. having two d pairs that can snap passes to the forwards or carry the puck out and join the rush will be more valuable then we realize.

If I was GM, I would have: Left a few contract slots open and waited to pick up a goalie off waivers

If you remember nothing else I said, remember I said this about the 2019-20 Leafs: This D group is solid, the cupboards still have viable players in them, and this is not the leafs only year to win it. they will be fine cap wise again next year.
