They said at least two weeks and then they reevaluate so that means probably 3 or 4 in the end.
Do they HAVE TO put him on LTIR? Is there any way they can cheat the system again for another million in cap space? We could really use that back-up goalie right now. - JohnFergusonJr
I think the only way to do it is to get someone already on LTIR from another team and you wouldn't want someone who is coming back this year, and you wouldn't want someone who is under contract after this year. That guy is Hanzal on Dallas. And I don't know if he's actually done or not. |

Just spit balling here but what about Hjalmarsson?
He's a steady RHD who is out for 3 months. Yeah, he's signed next year at 5 AAV but that might work both now and next year. Probably cheaper than any other top-four RHD they would bring in as a UFA. |

I could see that, but who do move for Hanzal? |

It's probably that type of creative thinking that we'll need. To put that specific example in context - the challenge with Hjalmarsson (other than saying challenge and Hjalmarsson in the same sentence) is that the season is 186 days long, and if he's out for 90 days, you accrue about $2.4m in LTIR relief, but have to pay him $2.6m in salary at the end, so he's a net loss. If we're going to try and play the LTIR game, we need someone who is going to miss most of, if not all, of the year in order to gain the relief that we'd need to add salary. |

It would have to be someone that is out longer than 3 months.. If Hjalmarsson comes back this season, we would have to move more bodies. |

Exactly.
It would have to be another David Clarkson type deal. Someone that won't play again this season.. |

Again, this is strictly if his injury is season ending, then you could approach Dallas with pretty much any pick for him. They aren't living in LTIR, so it means nothing to them - and they would get some form of asset for him sice he's a UFA at the end of the year.
If there's a chance that Hanzal would return, then it wouldn't matter anyway. We probably wouldn't want him because he wouldn't be filling our LTIR cup as we want, and the cost would be higher than we'd want to pay because Dallas would have a use for him. |

Chicago won three Stanley Cups with him on that contract.
But please, Leafs fan, tell me how Chicago screwed up.
Toronto fans would kill for that kind of screw up. |

Hossa. - Atomic Wedgie
I think the problem with Hossa and Zetterberg is that they are both under contract next year as well. I doubt the Leafs want to keep living in LTIR if they can avoid it. After this year - at the moment - they're out from under it.
But I was just thinking about the Tavares thing. I'm wrong.
His salary doesn't come off the books because he's on LTIR. You can just apply for LTIR relief if he's out longer than 24 days (and 10 games). So we're already capped out. That would mean that the $1.4m for 24 days could still be recouped. |
